Have you ever wondered why your prayer language doesn’t sound like real words? And why is it so repetitive? Why does it usually start with the same few words or syllables? Maybe you’ve asked those questions at times. We’ve asked the same questions—and quite a few others—regarding the gifts of tongues and interpretation of tongues. Then we sought the Lord for understanding of these gifts and did our best to operate in them faithfully. He gave us many insights and answers, and then brought it all together in a book. That was something we never really planned. It just sort of happened. We aren’t megachurch pastors. We don’t lead multi-national ministries. But we did have a calling from the Lord to write a book and spread a message. What exactly is that message? Speaking in tongues and interpreting tongues are powerful gifts with practical use for everyday people like us. When people operate in these gifts, God blesses the person operating in the gift, but He also blesses the people around them. What does speaking in tongues feel like emotionally? What is the purpose of speaking in tongues? What are the benefits? How does the gift of interpretation work? Are biblical tongues earthly languages, or heavenly languages? Or both? We invite you to explore these questions with us as you read through our book. Speaking in Tongues by Matthew & Kathleen Schwab with Chris McKinney is an informative and inspirational book about the spiritual gifts of speaking in tongues and interpretation that God has given to His children. The authors give personal accounts of their experiences with these gifts. Using Scripture and their own experiences they each write about how the Lord has developed and used these gifts in their lives. The chapters are short, articulate, and pithy that seemed to flow logically. I was surprised at the actual research studies that have been conducted on these particular gifts of the Spirit. There are also several chapters on prophetic revelation and these are written in an informative and encouraging way. Not dogmatically but in a manner that gently teaches and then encourages the reader to study relevant Scripture and ask the Lord for understanding, and test the revelation against the Scripture and asking for wisdom and discernment from other believers. The hope of these authors seems to be that readers will recognize that the spiritual gifts are to increase the fruit of God's Spirit in our lives and the lives of others, bringing glory to Him. I would definitely recommend this book for those who wish to explore further these gifts of the Spirit. I received a complimentary book from Called Writers Christian Publishing and was not required to write a review. The opinions are my own.
This is a relatively short book, separated into sections on speaking and interpreting tongues. As well as testimony and exhortation. The thing I appreciated most about this book is that it emphasized being in line with scripture throughout the chapters. It also encouraged the reader to search or scripture to make sure it aligned and to test their experiences. The authors shared simple and personal experiences, along with scripture and some research that has been done in this area. It doesn’t come off being apologetic or preachy. Just honestly explaining how this gift is for the church, how they seen it used biblically and how they’ve stewarded their own gift in this area. I would definitely recommend this book for someone wishing to explore further.
The main point of disagreement for me is in using the term Baptism of the Holy Spirit. There is only one baptism into Jesus, a water baptism. However we do see more tangible ways the spirit comes, such as at Pentecost. I do not see this as a second baptism.
This is a brief book divided into three sections by separate authors. The first deals with tongues, the second with the interpretation of tongues, and the third is a reader's experience learning from the first two sections. This book is not a deep Bible study or for someone who is not convinced about the gift of tongues being for today. Rather, it is a collection of personal conclusions and hypotheses that the authors have come to regarding tongues and the the gift of interpretation after being involved with their use in various contexts throughout some decades.
I appreciated and benefitted from most of their ideas, which all seem very reasonable from my own experiential standpoint. This book has helped me gain further understanding of these often perplexing gifts and encouraged me to explore more deeply.
Most comprehensive book on the subject i have seen
I thought the first part of the book was interesting in that it approached Tongues from a scientific and linguistic angle.
However, the book exploded in the 2nd part for me. It dove into the Scripture where few have studied and God teaches us about the Various Kinds of tongues and interpretation.
It anticipates your questions and points to Scripture for the answers along with personal examples from the author. A worthwhile, beneficial read that has encouraged me to pursue God more and earnestly desire His expressions of grace.
For me, the spiritual gifts of tongues and interpretation have been an area of mystery and some confusion. The authors of this book have presented simple explanations of the gifts by relating personal experiences and Biblical references. I enjoyed the authors’ writing styles and found the book, Speaking in Tongues, to be easy to read and understand. Previously, my reading on the subject has left me confused and skeptical about these gifts. After reading this book, I feel I have a much better understanding and appreciation of Spirit-lead gifts.
First time read for these authors. Having experienced the gift of tongues and praying in tongues on a consistent basis, I strongly recommend this book if you are just experiencing tongues, want to understand more what you are doing, or just want to know what it is. Very easy to understand and many references to the Word of when it was first released in the Book of Acts. I read the book to be refreshed with the understanding and planned on recommending this book to those who WANT TO UNDERSTAND MORE.
This book, which explains a subject that many of us may have heard about but didn’t really know much about it. This relatively small book is well written and explains the subject quite well, so if you’re curious about this subject of speaking in tongues and the interpretation this is a good book to look into.
This is a short book that explains Speaking in Tongues and gives the author's personal experiences. I found it fascinating and it also challenged me to ask God more about this in my prayer life. It is a good book for anyone who would like to know more about Speaking in Tongues and how other people experience it.
I'm only a couple chapters in but already I've discovered answers to things I've been really wanting to know for a long time. Can't wait to finish this journey
I learned quite a few new things. It's not the first book I've read about speaking in tongues, but it is the first one that includes interpreting tongues. I got an advanced copy for participating in the book launch. You can pre-order now. It's only 2.99 (not super long).
I really like Kathleen Schwab's SPEAKING IN TONGUES. She takes a subject in the world of Christians and talks about it in a manner that is realistic and true. So many preachers over the years have spiritualized speaking in tongues to such a degree that, I admit reluctantly, I have become afraid of speaking in tongues. I am not afraid in the context that I think it is wrong or that it is not for every Believer who chooses to accept it; I am afraid in the context of wanting it for myself. I have said out loud that I would not mind the gift of speaking in tongues, but the truth is that I have not REALLY wanted it. Not wholeheartedly.
Kathleen talks about the gift of tongues in practical terms that are easy to understand. I think that some people might feel that is taking away the spirituality of tongues, but I am of the belief that too many people over-spiritualize it. Yes, the gift of speaking in tongues is spiritual. Holy.
I have been through classes where we have discussed the practicality of praying over food vs. praying during a prayer service vs. praying in church, etc. We talked very specifically about how it is rude to pray long prayers over the food, keeping everyone from eating the food while it's hot. It was one of the best discussions about prayer I have participated in.
Kathleen's discussion of tongues is similar in that context. She talks about tongues in practical terms. She effectively keeps the spiritual holiness in her discussion. She balances the spritualness of the gift of speaking in tongues with the humble reality of how important it is in our walk with Christ.
SPEAKING IN TONGUES by Kathleen Schwab is a book that has been in desperate need for Believers for a long time.
