Celebrates the elaborate and outrageous fashions of the designer for such stars as Cher, Carol Burnett, Elton John, RuPaul, Diana Ross, and Bette Midler, in a volume that includes gatefolds of specially commissioned photographs. Reprint.
In 2025, Unmistakably Mackie unsurprisingly shows a bit of age. While it was interesting to read commentary about Bob from the stars he’s worked so closely with over the years, most of the content seemed to be recycled from old magazine clippings. The prominent text layout choices sometimes added to a dated feel, though I found the gown and human figure shapes to be appropriate (even if slightly harder to read). The book is complemented heavily with illustrations and photographs; Bob’s numerous designs for Vegas and Barbie were particularly fascinating! Overall though, I suspect there are newer and robuster books on Bob Mackie’s life and work.
Absolutely beautiful collection of photos and sketches. DeCaro has collected some great interviews with both Mackie and the people he's worked with. My biggest issue is that sometimes the text is shaped along the lines of the costume, or in little balls, or creates the shape of a woman, and while it is whimsical at first it gets annoying after a few pages of reading. Great overview of Mackie's career though.
I got this largely for the pictures of clothing, which were interesting & amusing; I think it was still written too close to the period it covers for any sort of real cultural analysis.
Heavy on design and imagery, light on copy, but that's what you want in a book-tribute to Bob Mackie - a taste of those fabulous spangly, colorful clothes! Oh, to be Mitzi Gaynor...
