This book was written based on an extensive research and rich data sources. The mission is ambitious, and the writer has succeeded in pursuing it. This book was developed from the author's doctoral research at TU Delft. He investigated the influence of the Dutch town design and planning concept in the lands where VOC and WIC operated. In the conclusion section, the author answers an important question/ hypothesis whether in that period there appeared a connection between the Dutch complex thought on town design and planning with their colony's early town devepment, in term of morphology and physical appearance on macro-scale. For my personal interest, I think the main chapters should be distinguished in periods, instead of based on the criteria of the acquisition. This selection will ease to understand the evolution of the investigated colonial towns, and what these "mutual heritages" are meant to both companies and the people.
