Extremely in-depth analysis of the Whitby, Port Perry, and Lindsay railway (WPP&L) that ran between Whitby and Lindsay. Arculus clearly did his research. Many references and quotes from archived sources in various libraries and collections in surrounding regions. Arculus also does a great job outlining the history of the line (and all its folleys) from beginning to end. Anecdotes from individuals who remembering riding these rails was a nice touch. It is a long read for 126 pages, however it is due to the wealth of detail present within.

The book was a bit front heavy with the timeline. Many pages on the early years however the latter twenty years were kind of rushed through. It is important to recognize however that likely more resources were available outlining the early days of the line, which resulted in this set up.

I was disappointed in the lack of editing regarding grammar and details. Many spelling and grammatical errors (duplicate words/sentences, misspelled words, etc). It is understood that this book is a smaller scale publication, however certain errors could have easily been caught (calling Grand Trunk "Grand Truck" multiple times).

Regardless, I give this book 5/5. It is important to document the history of this railline, which is long abandoned/forgotten with little visible portions remaining today.
Paul has done a masterful job of researching and should be commended for this project. Hopefully younger generations can read this and learn about what used to be a vital transportation and goods link between central Ontario and the lakeshore.
