I have long been drawn to read books that speak of the healing power of time spent outdoors in nature. Past favourites have included Richard Louv's, "The Nature Principle" and "Last Child in the Woods" and Orstein & Sobels' "Healthy Pleasures." Verla's book is a brilliant review of the treasure trove of research on this topic, with particular emphasis on the powerful effects of trees on physical, mental and spiritual well-being. Her extensive review of scientific papers on the topic, weaved with her personal story of managing and thriving with chronic illness is commendable! I do not have much appetite for reading scientific papers but Verla presents the hard evidence in an easily readable format with the addition of an array of action steps people can take to "take back an outside mindset." Fortunately for me, I have always had one. I highly recommend this book for those that do and do not have one as well as those looking to improve their outside mindset. In summary, this book is for EVERYONE!
Reading “Take Back Your Outside Mindset - Live Longer, Prevent Dementia, and Control Your Chronic Illness” felt like a walk through the forest as the author (Verla Fortier) shared her story. It felt like my feet fit into her footprints as my own reactions to being diagnosed with a chronic disease (type II Diabetes) echoed her journey in many ways. The exception is that Verla, using her medical knowledge and research, found a way to improve her health using the natural healing of spending time outdoors inhaling tree aerosols. This is a great read and contains information I wish I’d had 20 years ago. Thank you Verla, for pulling all the research together into one book, and for developing the associated work book, so that a reader like me can develop my own personal action plan and take CONTROL. I highly recommend reading this helpful book.
I am very impressed with this book. As I read through, the author leads you in to a “mindset” preparing you to enter the process of discovery through the forest and nature. By telling her own story, you have a clearer understanding of where you need to go for a healthier lifestyle. I found myself thinking of my own experiences outside. The book was a delight to read. It was very easy to follow. With Xmas around the corner, this is a perfect gift for friends and family.
I was looking forward to reading this book…instead I found it repetitive. The one thing that stuck out to me was, “Is this a tragedy or an inconvenience?” As I sit here job hunting, I realize my mindset needed to be shifted. I hope to carry this question with me going forward.
Everybody should read this book. If you want to stay healthy and live longer, you need to get outside. This writer will tell you why and how. She shares her personal experiences and will give you that little extra nudge that will get you out there. This is an inspiring and uplifting read, supported by fact based research. Enjoy, and Happy Trails.
