By. Msgr. James P. Moroney In a three-pronged approach, this book explores the theological meaning of the Mass, examines the role to which baptized Catholics are called in its celebration, and helps readers to discover the meaning of its words, songs, gestures, and ritual actions. Illustrated.
This is the second book on the Mass which I've read so far. Compared to the first one (can't remember the name of the book) published by CTS, this book covers each part of the Mass with more details. It doesn't contain much in-depth theological explanations that are difficult to grasp (especially for those of us who do not have much theological knowledge), instead this book is an easy read. In short, it's simple but concise and informational. So if you're expecting a book with very detailed and precise explanations on the Mass, this book will not be able to satisfy you.
However, if you are like me, an average Catholic who love the Mass and would like to know slightly more - why we do what we do in the Mass - then this book is definitely for you.
At the end of each chapter, there are questions provided for discussion. Therefore, this book is suitable for a group study.
Perhaps, the only concern is that this book used texts from the old Roman Missal (the book was published in 2008), but that doesn't affect me at all.
I read and discussed this book with a small group in my church parish during Lent. I think the author did a great job of explaining the Mass. I've been attending Mass all of my life and attended Catholic school as a child, but still learned something new from this book. Msgr. Mooroney's book has caused all of us in our small group to get a new appreciation for what our Catholic Mass is all about. Thank you, Monsignor!
