I haven't followed through with the guided activities yet, but I intend to spend some quality time with them tomorrow. I wanted to read through everything first, to see if I liked the way the activities were implemented. I do feel as though a lot of this information is information I've seen or heard before, but I read a lot of similar books. Also this is the first book I've read with blanks in the chapters to complete tasks on, and while I'm reading it on Kindle - it's still very nice to have that visual cue for easy returning to those pages. I look forward to completing the tasks and getting a better handle on my voice.
HIGHLIGHTS: 1. Sometimes it seems the best way to connect with others is to follow the crowd.
2. Making the commitment to live intentionally and authentically allows you to filter others’ messages, rules, and beliefs when they don’t apply to you. It also frees you to focus your time, resources, and talent on the people and projects you care about the most.
3. Don’t squander talent on people who don’t appreciate it.
4. Well-rounded is synonymous with “average”. Our homogenized culture celebrates average performance with average results.
5. Busyness is quite often a tool of distraction.
6. Once people know you care about them, they will be compliant with their care. More likely to follow-through on recommendations.
7. You are your best, most powerful self when you make full use of your enduring qualities and unique traits.
8. Super-achievers and difference-makers harness their gift so they can excel in their areas of expertise.
9. Honor the gifts God has to give you by using them to serve others.
10. When you listen to the wrong voices, you give away your power and your identity.
Written by a life coach, this book provides tools (mostly journaling exercises) to help people discover their passions and find their niche in life. There were a lot of case studies that kept it interesting enough, mostly stories of people who switched careers and found fulfillment. I found the over-used pop phrase "finding your authentic voice" irritating and it was mixed with Christian lingo in a manner that could only be described as "Christianity light." The emphasis was aimed at convincing me that I could trust my inner voice without recognition of the fact that it can also lead me astray. Perhaps I am in the wrong season to appreciate a book like this, since I am comfortable in my station in life and not yearning to make any major changes. This book might provide some good pointers but will leave a fleeting impression.
I thoroughly enjoyed Joel's book for one reason. It was honest and warm and devoid of any typical 'self improvement' cliches. Sometimes you have to go deep to find your 'voice' and a lot of people find it too painful to do that. Joel's book walks you thru the process a little at a time. Not painful at all. Highly recommend this book.
