Ilona comes from many places but the east coast of Australia is her home. She has published her debut novel, about ten years in the making! In between there where other things of course... Now spare time is reserved for breathing and sometimes writing the next book in the series. (Nearly there!). If there's one place she could get lost in, it's,,, no not a book (sorry) it's the garden. Where time losses it's meaning, smoke alarms go off, coffees get cold and inspiration grows.

2.5 stars
Looking for spirits is pointless. They find us. We can't find them.
They story started out really well. I really liked how the starting was magical and dark. This book tried to combine two completely different dimensions, magic and science. When I was going through the book, I could see all the ideas the author might have had in her mind. But I will be honest, the execution didn't impress me that much. I felt the ideas got lost and weren't properly implemented... This book was more like a set-up for the next one. There was no extra build up and everything was written to the exact point. But yet, somehow the pace turned out to be really slow.
The fantasy part of the book was what I liked more. And unfortunately, that was the smaller part. I would've loved to know more about the magical world and the history of it. I have a feeling that we will get to see more of it in the next book.
All in all it was a light-hearted read that deals with some really grave issues of modern days. I really hope we get a very fulfilling sequel and we get to have all our questions answered!!
An epic journey of self-discovery in a world full of magic and secrets.
It was an accident, it wasn’t meant to happen, Troy just wanted to find work and a lover. He didn’t know that he could become caught up in a Black Triangle riddled in collateral damage and mystical revelations.
And this is how Troy and his friends get caught up in a desperate race for survival where time is against them and dangers lurk at every corner. They must not only discover the powers within them, but also learn how to use them and protect both themselves and those around them. They have to travel through treacherous places for which no maps have been written, in a world full of magic and secrets. But darkness is close on their heels and keeps spreading and the young sorcerers must race against time to stay ahead.
Triangles of Black is an epic tale of intrigue and espionage, abuse of power and injustice, with a deep plot and wonderfully fleshed out characters. And KUDOS to the author for the originality of the magical protectors. They are the best part of this book!
Complex characters, awesome and at times unbelievably intense and vivid magic, a beautifully layered plot and downright fabulous magic beings - this book has all the ingredients of a first class fantasy read. My only complaint was the pacing. It felt a bit too slow at times and rushed at others.
Full of adventure and humor, even laugh out moments, this is one of those tales that masterfully utilizes fantasy to present the real-life problems of society in general. If you love fantasy adventure and fabulous magic, Triangles of Black is the perfect choice.

Very unique, magical and fun fantasy novel. This book stands apart from the rest, thanks to the creative talents and imaginative way the author has with telling a good story. She has created characters who you get to know and actually like, and placed them in a world full of magic, spirits and adventure.
Personally I enjoyed it, but the real test was with my preteen grandchildren. I read it out loud to them over several weeks, and they loved it as much as I did. Besides being enjoyable, it was a clean read. Highly recommend!
Sometimes you finish a book - just lost for words, gasping at where it left you... confronted, hoping, wondering, even wishing. One of these is Triangles of Black: Once in a Thousand Years, an epic adventure of how Troy, his sister Sophie and her indigenous friend Tracy, become involved in the black triangles.
What happens when people with power crush people with knowledge and wisdom? Injustice, conspiracy, opposition, defence… for those who survive. The three must find solutions to problems and learn that they are the key to a lost lock (metaphorically speaking).
Living in Australia, the characters have a down-town feel. The odd family get-togethers, parties, nuisance cousins, back streets, workplaces, bushlands and friends (known and estranged) and the thugs that lurk nearby (sponging up profits or spawning evil) make this read entertainment tonight (and probably not tomorrow cause I would have read the book by then).
Having an indigenous heroin Tracy is also totally awesome. I love her spirituality, intelligence and strong will. Her and Sophie can’t believe it when Jason (Tracy’s half brother) starts dating Katie, because everyone thinks she’s the biggest tart… and she works for her dad’s bank with the triangle logo…
The friendly couple, Jerry and Jennie, are farmers that Troy works for. Jerry is also an inventor of a revolutionary generator that has caught the attention of – no, not Souron’s eye – but close enough, the eye of corporate giant John (Katie’s dad), the power station owner and bank manager who leaves a path of destruction in his wake with the help of his evil twin brother (another bigwig who works at ASIO). Let’s just say those humble farmers surprised me big time, and I just love that old beaten-up truck of Jerry’s! Go you good thing ☺
Then there is the spunky gentle Lala who Troy meets on a charity run. Independent and fearless, she’s a book you can’t judge by the cover. And the Scottish fisherman Finn – I’d love to sit down to a cup of tea with him on deck and listen to some of his salty yarns. Morphous Island hosts a popular holiday resort and also a no-go zone - a zone akin to the infamous Bermuda Triangle… This book takes me many exciting and interesting places but the place I hate the most is ‘The Vault’ a dark and cruel ex-jail compound that was rumoured to be haunted…
The plot is deep and the characters as complex as life itself. This book sucked me into its magic whirlpool. It reveals so much yet is shrouded in mystery. And lets talk about the magic… The artefacts are exquisite, and how Troy, Sophie and Tracy discover the magic is awesome. The misunderstandings this initially creates and the desperate times when magic becomes real – so intense, I wish I could tell you about those vivid scenes but it would be a real spoiler… but I can say the suspense at times is a killer.
The three magical guardians are super cool and one of the many highlights. Zenith the armoured knight and his grey charger rock. He’s a distant somewhat rude character while Shiven the dragon and Welder the chriptoqas – a splendid black unicorn mare with bat wings, fire mane and tail (it’s no spoiler - they appear on the first page) are a more amiable team. Each of these have attributes designed to fulfil their specific duties. Without these ancients the trio are on their own, but the guardians senses are sharper then the mortals…
This is fantasy with non-fiction themes, a potent reality woven into the fabric of this world. I really can’t do this book enough justice, suffice to say… TOTALLY LOVED IT!!!
Sophie experiences an encounter that shocks and awes her, a hint that there is more to her mundane world than she could ever have hoped. She confides in her brother, Troy, only to find herself seeing a hypnotherapist for a short while, trying to convince her it was all in her mind.
When Troy gets a job as a farmhand at Jeannie and Jerry's farm soon after, he never could have imagined what might follow. Jerry's engineered a unique green, hydroelectric generator, and certain powerful people will not rest until the "threat" to their industry is no more.
As Troy finds himself and his friends' lives and livelihoods in increasingly greater danger, he, Sophie, and their friend, Tracy, must discover not just how to protect themselves and those dear to them, but who they are and what power dwells within each of them. A world of magic and long-forgotten secrets is at their fingertips, waiting to be discovered. Beings of magic may help guide and protect these fledgling sorcerers, but it will ultimately be their own choices that will decide their fates. Maybe magic isn't so lost to the world after all?
While slow to start and a bit rough, Triangles of Black tells an intriguing story of corporate greed, espionage, friendship, and magic. It might have benefited from further editing, as there is a distinct lack of balance between "telling" and "showing" for much of the book. However, the story, the humor, the magic, and the love of all things equine shine through the writing. I laughed out loud at the cockroach scene! One of the primary themes is a critique of corporate monopolies and disregard of their environmental impact in favor of capitalist interests.

Sophie knows what she experienced. She shares with Troy, her brother, who believes it is all in her mind. He sets up an appointment with a counselor because he is concerned about her. However, once Troy has his own experience Sophie, Tracy and Troy try to understand what is happening.
In the meantime, Troy finally lands a job as a farmhand. Ironically, the Ministry of Power is interested in why the farm is not using electricity and how it is generating power. This means Troy unexpectedly finds himself in the line of fire and must give up his job.
Troy, Sophie and Tracy are beginning to uncover a long forgotten world of magic. They are being guided by three magical beings who are also trying to protect as their lives are in increasing amounts of danger.
The story covers a variety of elements from magic, friendship, espionage, and corporate greed to name a few. I found a few moments where I actually was laughing out loud.
The book itself would benefit from additional editing. There were times when I found myself having to go back a few pages as the author had jumped scenes without a distinct break. There were also times where the flow didn’t make sense as sentences weren’t complete.
Overall, I enjoyed the book and am looking forward to the next in the series.

I received Triangles of Black: Once in a Thousand Years in exchange for an honest review. First, I want to begin with the things I enjoyed about the book. I enjoyed the development of the plot. Therefore, it keeps you guessing and wondering what will happen next. I also enjoyed how complex the characters. However, they were well thought out. I also found that the suspense was demonstrated well throughout the book. In turn, I also enjoyed the imagination used when creating magical protectors. I enjoyed how the unicorn has bat wings and while the dragon has a fair mane and tail. I enjoyed the creativity throughout the books with a hint of realism. The only problem I had with the book was the pace. Therefore, I found the pace to be a little slow when I feel it should have been a little faster. Overall I really liked this book. Therefore, I really enjoyed reading the triangles of black.
I received Triangles of Black: Once in a Thousand Years in exchange for an honest review. Receiving a free copy has in no way influenced my opinion of the book. I really liked this book. I found that the characters are complex and well thought out. I only had one problem with this book. Therefore, I feel that some parts of the story were slow past when they could have been faster. Therefore, the book successfully swept me into a magical world. I also find that the suspense was delivered well throughout the story. I enjoyed the imagination used for the magical protectors and the role that they played.
Triangles of Black: Once in a Thousand Years is a magical story about three young people who discover three ancient spirits from a long forgotten time.
It's a quest for both spirit and human to find the special Shrine. It was an exciting and adventurous story for me. Full of magic, bad and good things. My favourite spirit is the chriptoquas - a jet black unicorn mare with bat like wings and fire mane and tail.
