Whom she killed.
Hence the whiskey.

Constable Dorian Wells has enough on his plate protecting his six-year-old niece from her mother's addiction, so why does he feel compelled to help the drunk teacher who seems to have no problem waking up with a chicken in her bed? Especially when she digs holes with her bare hands in the soccer field, refuses to get up before noon and seems determined to wallow in despair?

Can Dorian convince Lucy that happily ever after exists, when she is determined to destroy everything in its path?

Love doesn’t come easy for the couple in this book, but there were plenty of laughs and tears along the way. A truly unique romance novel, Love on the Rocks features a heroine, Lucy, whose fiance passed away a few years ago - and she blames herself. She has slipped into an unrelenting depression ever since, finding solace at the bottom of a bottle. Lucy managed to purchase an old school for $1 with the agreement that she would turn it into something that would benefit the community, but so far all she’s done is sink deeper and deeper into the hole she’s created for herself. When she meets Dorian, the adorable local cop, she reeks of booze, is unwashed and can barely make it through the day. Dorian is no stanger to alcoholism, as he’s had more than one family member suffer from the disease, so he sees the woman hiding beneath the surface. As Dorian and Lucy are brought together time and again, Lucy realizes that there might just be something in her life worth cleaning up her act for - because a man like Dorian definitely deserves more than the woman she’s become.

Initially, I was torn about this book. Lucy isn’t shown in the most flattering light, and the writing style reflects the chaos that is her life. It was a little hard to follow at times but filled with humor. I loved Dorian from the very beginning - he is the sweetest guy, a man who is often overlooked because he has a lazy eye (something that Lucy often points out in her drunken rants). He is so understanding and patient; I would not have liked this book nearly as much if not for him. It’s a sweet and clean romance that definitely has depth. Lucy cannot fully commit to loving Dorian until she loves herself again, so we’re taken on her journey to recovery. I liked the second half of the book significantly more than I did the first, because it takes a while for things to really start to develop between Lucy and Dorian, and I would’ve loved more of that. Overall, it’s an interesting and unique read that is as much about self improvement as it is romance.

Lucy came back to her home town, Heartswell Harbour, Nova Scotia after she lost her job as a teacher and her fiancé died in a car accident. She is broke and defeated so she gets handles her feelings by getting drunk. She bought an old school house for a dollar with the stipulation that she does something with it for the community. She has no intentions, she just wants to live with her do and goat and try to forget. Then constable Dorian Wells and his sweet niece walk into her life and things will never be the same.

This is a fantastic, humorous contemporary romance. I loved this book and could not put it down. The characters are so alive, flawed but filled with great personality. The dialogue is simply hilarious yet at time serious. This story touches your heart as the characters need to make the decision to find happiness by dealing with and overcoming their fears guilt, and insecurities. The seriousness, and resulting devastation in people’s lives that drinking causes, is dealt with extremely well giving this romance an added dimension. The story is easy to read, the romance is touching and the writing superb. One of the best books I have read this year.

I was given an ARC of this book by the author. I will admit that romance is not normally my genre but I just loved the real-ness of the characters in this book, and the handling of heavy subjects like alcoholism and mental health even in the context of a “typical” romance. Mavis’ dry sense of humour is all over this book and I for one will keep reading!
