کتاب بسار خوبی برای کنکاش در مسئله خدا و شر است. زبان کتاب ساده و بدون پیچیدگی است ولی برای برخی قسمت ها نیاز به آشنایی به منطق دارد. کتاب نشان می دهد که بین فرض های زیر چه روابطی وجد دارد:
1-خدا وجود دارد.
2-خدا قادر مطلق است.
3-خدا خیر مطلق است.
4-خدا کاملا خیر است.
5-شر وجود دارد.
دیدگاه های منتقدین خدا ناباور طرح می شود و در مقابل پاسخ خداباوران به آنها داده می شود.

از نظر لاب نیتس، قدرت مطلق خدا تضمین می کند که خدا این توانایی را داشته باشد که از میان تعداد بی شمار جهان های ممکن، هر جهان ممکنی را که بخواهد تحقق بخشد.خیر بودن کامل خدا که همیشه در جهت بهترین ها به کار می رود، تضمین می کند که او با ارزش ترین جهان های ممکن را بیافریند، و عالم مطلق بودن خدا تضمین می کند که همه جهان های ممکن را می شناسد، ارزش آنها را محاسبه می کند و بهترین را محقق می سازد. پس مفهوم خدا در اندیشه خداباورانه مستلزم این است که هر جهانی که وجود دارد، در واقع بهترین جهان ممکن است.
در فرآیند مقایسه و ارزیابی همه جهان های ممکن، خدا شرور طبیعی و اخلاقی آنها را پیش بینی می کند. او جهانی را برای تحقق بر می گزیند که اجزای تشکیل دهنده آن- حتی اجزای شر- به طور کلی آن را بهتر می سازد: خدا نه فقط خیرهای برتر را از شر پدید می آورد، بلکه آنها را با بهترین خیر های ممکن مرتبط می سازد: بنابراین عدم تجویز آنها خطا خواهد بود. به سادگی می توان گفت که همه شرور جهان در بهترین بودن آن در میان جهان های ممکن سهیم اند: اگر کوچک ترین شر موجود در جهان برداشته می شد، این جهان دیگر این جهان نبود: جهانی که با همه موجوداتش خدا آن را بهترین یافت.

Surprisingly unbalanced. The author, in both language and content, showed his bias toward theism. It was well written but I am disappointed in the preferential treatment of theistic thought.

A concise and thorough introduction to the Problem of Evil in all it's variations. I am glad Peterson touches on the 'existential problem of evil' in his final chapter. Anyone who has ever asked, "Why does evil exist in the presence of a loving god?" will find this book to be an easy transition into the world of philosophy of religion. Though this book will not necessarily answer all of your questions on the problem of evil (which is a commonplace in philosophy), it will summarize the topics nicely and will guide you in the right direction for further reading.

من تا صفحه ی 40 بیشتر نتوانستم بخوانم. یعنی چون جوابم را پیدا کرده بودم دیگر الزامی نداشت که بخوانم. در کل ولی به نظرم کتاب خوبی است برای آن هایی که دلشان میخواهد بحث های اینچنینی را دنبال کنند و نباید فراموش کرد اینجا هم قرار است تا با خدای غربی ها آشنا شد. نه یک خدای شرقی...

Well written introduction into the problem of evil. Deals with the issue from its different facets (existential, theoretical, logical). A good place to start in the dilemma of the problem of evil.

Sometimes difficult to read, Peterson nevertheless does an excellent job of summarizing the issues and the various theistic answers in a short and interesting book. Valuable for any student of Christian Apologetics or the Problem of Evil.
