AHHH! SOOO GOOD! OBSESSED! Truly loving this series. We finally meet the famous Nicholas and it is nothing short of terrifyingly alluring.

At the end of the last book, Josie needed to get away from Boston because Nicholas said he was going to kill her so she hops on a plane to London.

On the way, we learn a lot about Nicholas from his first journal. It’s the 1500s and Nicholas is a human. He has fallen in love with a woman named Constant Ingleby. They secretly get married, despite his family’s wishes. Constant’s family has lost their riches, so they want Nicholas to look for a better match so they send him to court in London. While he is away he writes to Constant. He told her he would record all his daily doings in a journal. (These are the journals Josie has, which she considers them love letters. She wonders, what happens to turn him into the sarcastic and murderous creature he is now.) Nicholas writes, he’s never felt true unconditional love before. The only warmth and love in his life has come from Constant and her excellent parents. At court, he attends to the king. The king needs him to sleep with a very wealthy, widowed woman that has had her eye on Nicholas. Nicholas refuses saying he’s already married. The king says he recognizes no such union, and never will, unless he sleeps with countess Elizabeth, who is offering lots of money to help England.

He makes his way to Countess Elizabeth’s suites and she offers him wine. She expresses her long time to desires to be with Nicholas. They do it and after she whispers, “I will keep you Nicholas Montigue”. She asks him if he agrees to be kept, which confuses him. She laughs and admits that he already is kept since he sipped from her and she sipped from him. He says he recalls doing no such thing, and she reminds him that he drank the wine in which she laced with her blood. She laughs “ Ah, Nikki you will pleasure me for many, many years to come”. She reveals that since they share blood she can track him everywhere he goes and knows his feelings. She says, “you will learn to love me they all do you are mine”. He asks if he can return to his love in Ariston. She lets him but warns, “you are kept wherever you go I will find you”. When he gets to Ariston, he hears mourning bells. Constant died that morning! (Lord Montigue wasn’t always bad, at one time he had loved deeply Josie thinks.)

Constant’s family was shocked Nicholas came. They were told not to write him anymore and that he is in love with Countess Elizabeth. They beg him to report to his mother that they did as she bid. He learns that they were stripped of their titles and luxury then ordered to be servants in the manor. All the hard work killed Constant. Nicholas helps bury her and engraved “now and always” on her grave stone. His mother orchestrated his beloved, Constant’s death. He couldn’t kill himself because he wants to spend eternity with her and in the Catholic Church if you commit suicide you go to hell. He hopes to go back to courts defy the king and have his head cut off. However the king says he is too valuable and must continue to please the Countess. So he went to the slums and started a brawl. He died and the next day he was a live again. So he tried again the next day and the same thing occurred, he kept coming back to life! He realized this was the Countess’ doing. He figures he needs to kill her or have her kill him. “You are Kept, you live by my will and my word”. He can only be killed by her hand only. She promises to kill him after she has her fun.

Months later, she still hasn’t killed him and he asks her when she will so he can be reunited with his love. She tells him, “you will love me Nikki as I love you”. He spits, “love? You do not know the meaning of the word”. He attacks her and she bites his neck and drains him of blood. He thought she killed him but instead she turned him into a vampire as well. He accidentally starts killing people. He is appalled that he is now a creature of the night. He wants to destroy himself, but the blood calls to him. He is feasting on a body in the streets when Countess Elizabeth finds him. He asks how did you find me and she responds I’ll always know where you are and what you feel unless you die. He is angry at her and tries to kill her. She tells him he needs more training before he can kill someone as old, strong, and powerful as her. She asks him to join her for the last time which he refuses. She referred to him as a Lord so he concludes that his father is dead so he returns home to kill his mother and the priest that ratted them out. (Josie thinks, “it really wasn't his fault he was turned but what he's done since. What happened to him was awful but how does he justify his actions now”.)

Many years later, Nicholas hires a vampire hunter, Richard
lanesborough to kill Countess Elizabeth. He goes to meet up with him and he and Elizabeth show up together. Elizabeth laughs and admits she created the brothern of vampire hunters long ago as her own personal army to keep her power. She orders Richard to kill Nicholas. He stabs Nicholas near the heart but not close enough to kill. Nicholas is hoping for sweet death when Richard’s head is ripped from his body. Jerald saved him! Nicholas asks him why he didn’t let him die; however, with Jerald, Nicholas found a new purpose in life. Together they will kill each and every vampire hunter. Then he will find and kill the devil, Countess Elizabeth.

She gets a call from James saying he went to her apartment to check on her and found Officer Blake Reynolds dead with his throat ripped out and dismembered. She now realizes that James isn’t a vampire and he’s not chasing her. She realizes that James was saving her from the vampire the night she fell after leaving the restaurant. James admits he has been following her for a while and was using her as bait so he could slay the vampire. She questions why she wasn’t allowed in his house when he saved her. He tells her that he has a bunch of vampire weapons in his house and didn’t want her to think he was a psycho killer which she thought anyway. He admit his last name isn’t Hunter and actually Lanesboro, which is the name of the generational vampire hunters and makes him Lucy’s brother.

She is trying to head to Nicholas’ family home, Ariston. On her way, she sees the hunt going after a fox and understands how terrifying it can be to be hunted. So she intervenes and stops them from getting the fox. One of the men, Daniel Parker, offer her a ride on his horse back to the town, he staying at which happened to be Ariston. Josie gets a job. There’s a waitress in the Manor where Nicholas grew up. Instead of waitressing, she sneaks into the library to return the journals. As she was sneaking into the library, she runs into the same man, Daniel and they both enter the library together. Daniel says that he never sees the owner Nicholas, and that the journals are said to be made from human flesh. After she returns the journals, she start taking pictures of the other journals. They get caught by the butler and removed from the premises. Before she leaves, she stops to visit Constant’s grave. She tells her that her husband is a prick but he wrote her letters she’ll never receive.

Daniel offers to take her wherever she wants to go. She says she wants to go to France so he offers his apartment in Paris in which she stays there for several months as a waitress. On break on day, she tries to call Margarita because she’s been leaving her messages as a form of therapy or a journal. Margarita answers!! She’s alive! She’s been on a yacht traveling the world with Jerry. She said Jerry picked up Kitty and had him when she was in Vegas. She asks where Josie is at and that’s when she realizes Jerry is Jerald from the vampire diaries. She immediately hangs up the phone. She realizes Margarita is a kept. She waits on a man for several months his name is Mr. Lumier. He engages in conversations with her and she finds herself drawn to him. She thinks about him a lot. We find out later he is actually Nicholas a.k.a. Dracula. He offers to have dinner with her and says it’ll be their last supper together. She understands what this means he is Nicholas and plans to kill her so she spills water on her food and jumps out of the ladies bathroom window and escapes. She grabs all of her things from Daniel‘s apartment. She phones Daniel and he tells her to go to Sicily where he has a friend named Ricardo that is a chef and he will help her out.

She lives in Sicily for a while, loving her life of sleeping with Ricardo (boss with benefits), feeding stray cats, and learning more of how to be a chef. She sometimes finds herself thinking about Nicholas and misses him and their conversations. She calls Margarita on her new phone and they miss each other. She tells Margarita she is a kept and she isn’t surprised. She tells Josie it’s not what she thinks. She says, “he bites me when we make love”. She tells her that she should could stay with them and Jerry will protect her. She informs her that Nicholas has told Jerry that he doesn’t want to kill Josie anymore. Josie doesn’t believe any of this and blocks her number.

One day, Lucy, the vampire Hunter finds her at the restaurant and tells her she has no idea what she’s up against and that Nicholas will come find her. Lucy offers Josie to come with her and they can work together to catch Nicholas by using Josie as bait. She also mentioned there’s a way to save Margarita from Jerry’s influence. Lucy also says that the vampire hunters have been looking for very old vampires for generations. Since the vampire hunter genes run in the Lanesboro family and skip a generation. She reveals that if you sip a vampire, you gain the superpower of never dying except for decapitation. We also find out that the vampire hunters were created by Countess Elizabeth, who is the vampire who turned Nicolas. She has the hunters catch other vampires so she can be the strongest and eldest vampire. The hunters are looking for a really old vampire. They don’t know him or her name or sex. They were hoping to discover this by reading Nicholas’ diaries. They aren’t after Countess Elizabeth since she was in the first journal. They are after someone older and probably far more powerful and deadly. (I think it’s Jerry!) She tells Josie that dairy not only makes their blood taste bad but lessens the vampire’s powers on humans. Josie agrees to help Lucy but wants to say goodbye before she goes. After she says goodbye to everyone, she goes home to say goodbye to Ricardo. She finds Ricardo dead with his throat, ripped out and Lucy with her head torn off in the windowsill. She screams and falls down the stairs. Nicholas is there. She can’t move. He scooped Josie up and said she safe now and he’s going to keep her. Oooo I’m so excited, finally they are together. I wonder what will happen next!

There's a lot that happens in part 2, Josephine is on the run, fearing for her life. We learned more about the men in this story and yes I did feel sorry for our vamp, his back story was very sad. The ending of this book omg. Book 3 I'm on my way.

On the run

Josie went to Ereston, the estate of Lord Nicholas Montague, to learn more about him. While there she returns the two journals. She learns how much he had loved Constance and how devastated he was by her death. He was turned vampire by the Countless Elspeth Deauforte, a favorite of Henry VIII. Josie went to Paris and served a favorite customer until Jacque Lumier proves to be Nicholas. Josie runs to Sicily but Nicholas finds her and tells her he plans to keep her.

Hooked

Running from a vampire seems silly but I'm hooked and our fmc is still alive book ends on a cliffhanger of course.
Spice 1/5 she took the cop as a lover described it as ordinary in book one, took another better lover in this book but the author didn't give us any delicious details (bummer).
Our fmc has read his first and last journal, seeing him as the monster he is today but knowing the human he was and how he was wronged leads her to fear him but have some compassion for him too.
She spent a month talking and befriending him not knowing it was him, and now she misses him.
The hunters want to use her as bait and she agreed to help yet she doesn't trust the hunters either.
Author hooked me I will say this is a four book series that could've been just two...Other than that I'm onto book three happily.
This is a fun twist on vampire books.

Wow…keeps getting better!

Kept has just KEPT on getting better! Book 2 expands Josie’s knowledge of Nicholas giving her some compassion for the unwanted path which made him a vampire!
Still as Josie runs she comes to realize she has nowhere to hide.
Start reading Book 2 early because if you’re like me you aren’t going to want to put it down!

Riveting series

Terrifying, bloody and gory vampires but somehow also surprisingly likeable which I didn't expect. I was surprised to feel this way. A bit like admiring a predator like a jungle animal. Fascinating story so far. The characters are well written and lots of surprises along the way.

Running

Josephine ran to England then to France and then to Italy. Quite the traveler trying to stay alive and one step ahead of Nicolas who she believes wants to kill her. Lots going on.

Thumbs up from me.

This book was soooo much better than the first book. This series is a fairly quick read. As I’ve read 2 tonight already because I can’t sleep. Im interested in how this story ends. Definitely breaks the mold from your typical vampire story.

Kept, Book 2 - This part is dark and deadly but not graphically gory. There is a massive cliffhanger but getting there is suspense filled and intriguing. It is too easy to slip into book report mode with all the events happening and the emotions running amok.

Ms. Allan does it again bringing a story to life so realistically and mesmerizing that you cannot stop reading. Then too soon, it is the last page and you want more! I contacted the author to review her books and picked up this up through Booksprout. 5*

Kept, Book 1 - Although set in Boston, I enjoyed this story by one of my favorite AU authors. The storylines are set up with the day to day life of an American woman and the current journal entries of a 500-year-old British vampire. Toss in a few vampire hunters, best friends and law officers to make a good cast of characters.

The fact that she wants to be a French chef has a few recipes of the base sauces highlighted. Of course, this quickly read, novella length story ends not quite as a cliffhanger but sets up the second book.

I contacted the author to review her books. 5*

I love the premise. This is the second book in the series. I can't tell if the vampires are supposed to be evil or not. I can't tell if the vampire hunters are supposed to be helpful or not. The protagonist doesn't seem to have any emotion towards people she is in a relationship with even if it is a friendship. It falls flat. There was also a lot of telling and very little in the way of showing. I felt like I was being talked at instead of being immersed in the series. There is great promise in this writer and I do look forward to her other books.

Taking the journal on the run turns out to be more complicated than Josephine had ever anticipated....

And so much more dangerous and lufe threatening. And not just her life..

Such a twisty turny tale that literally had me gasping and whispering "oh noooo" so many times....

I'm not sure if there is another to follow. I hope there is as it as left with a scorching cliff hanger again....!!!!!

Josephine still has Lord Nicholas Montague’s journal she runs to where she thinks that he wouldn’t even bother looking for her and that’s his family’s estate but is she stepping out of the frying pan into the fire?. Fantastic story but you do need to read book 1 to understand what’s going on and I can’t wait to read the next book in this series and I recommend this book.
