At the age of 14 years old, Roy found himself homeless due to domestic violence. He moved from house to house to survive. With only a duffle bag to call home, he was at the mercy of the streets. After navigating his way to college, Roy swore to never return to that life again. However, one dream would change it all. This riveting memoir journeys through Roy's decision to live homeless once again, but this time, Homeless by Choice, with a mission to inspire youth to never give up on life, their dreams and understand the power of higher education. This journey would lead him to uncover the hidden issues that plague America's youth. Surprised by what he finds, Roy is forced to face his own childhood and the demons that have haunted him for years. Just because you have a house doesn't mean you have a home. Are you homeless by choice?
I was very disappointed in this memoir. I had expected a story of hard work and perseverance but it felt very narcissistic and entitled. In one example he spoke about basically blackmailing a staff member at HSU by saying he had no idea who he was talking to and that Roy would tell everyone in places he went and spoke about HSU not letting his family see him graduate college over not having the money to pay for the college he attended and claiming this is “using your voice” imo this is manipulation. The book was also contradictory. I read this after seeing Roy speak and think he has a great story and has overcome adversity to become successful but this memoir did not hit the mark.
Roy is a friend, Brother, and inspiration to me. As he walks through this life he continues to Survive in the World he was born into. Homeless is a place we don't want to go. Escaping that is a choice... To return to it can be fatal or a Blessing. Roy Juarez Jr. did just that... He is Blessed and is a Blessing to Homeless Youth in the USA and around the World. Must read on my page... God Bless, Pastor Don Kelley
This book is simply AMAZING! I had the pleasure of meeting Roy at the 2019 Texas Mentoring Summit, as he was the keynote speaker. His story is both heartbreaking and powerful. Hearing it or reading it will definitely cause mixed tears of sadness and joy. To see him forgive and overcome his childhood is empowering. He's going to change so many lives in our youth and this book shows his impact thus far. Love it! 5+++++++ stars
I found homeless by choice as an interesting memoir. There were some confusing areas in the book so I can't give it that high of a rating. Overall while reading the memoir I found it suspenseful and was able to relate to some of the information in the book. This memoir showed me that no matter what position im in I can help others and if there's issues there's always an solution. It's a good book but can get confusing towards the middle and end of the memoir.
