Jo Kusi is a London based author who has been creating stories from the very tender age of eleven. After many years as a management consultant in corporate Britain, Jo now pursues his dream of authoring children’s books.
Being born in West Africa, in a home where storytelling was customary, had a lasting impression on Jo who now draws inspiration from the many stories he was told as a child. He has now authored dozens of short pieces, poems and stage plays.
His true passion is for children’s books, with ‘Jordan and the Dancing Hippo’ being his debut publication. Having worked with children for years, Jo uses a unique writing style that makes it easy for children to learn to read while stirring up their imagination.
When Jo is not writing, he is dreaming up another new exciting story or spending time with his family of three.
Adorable story about anticipating a birthday. Jordan is excited about his upcoming birthday, but when the day arrives and no presents, he must learn patience. Bright illustrations help with the rhyming story and when the dancing hippo arrives in one of the boxes, Jordan celebrates with his new playmate. Whimsical and sweet, this is a cute story about learning that good things come to those who wait.
Jordan can’t wait for his birthday, but when the big day comes, it seems like everyone has forgotten. Jordan has to learn patience before he can enjoy his reward: a dancing hippo.
The artwork is cartoonish and adorable. Background objects can be a bit simple in places, but the character work is a standout. The color palette is bright and isn’t afraid of sharp contrasts.
The story mostly centers around Jordan’s anticipation of his coming birthday. The celebration is delayed and Jordan has to learn a lesson about patience, which is fine. We often don’t celebrate birthdays until after dinner and my daughter has had to learn patience too.
The dancing hippo doesn’t arrive until the end and is not part of the main story, which is a pacing problem. The hippo is on the cover and in the title; it should be the most important part of the book, and as soon as he arrives, the story is over. Kids are likely to be looking for more of the hippo… Maybe in the sequel?
