I feel like sections of this should be required reading for grad students in English lit, esp those working in Brit lit. This was a fascinating, lucidly written account of the discipline's origins, and I feel like it's really reoriented my understanding of some of the contemporary debates within lit studies. The author's tone also felt very humane, for lack of a better word? Really enjoyed reading his work.
