There is an abundance of art history books for the art reader to choose from. Why choose this volume which ranges from the Renaissance painters to the Impressionist painters?
The most obvious reason would be the full color plates (all 240 of them) which lavishly fill the book.
But color plates alone do not make an art book compelling. After all, there are many art books in the Thames and Hudson series which have full color plates.
The other reason was Nathaniel Harris's familiarity with his subjects which is shown in the accompanying essays.
