Tales from the Mushroom

Rate this book
Cliff Hamrick is a middle-aged counselor suffering from life-long depression and anxiety. Though he had tried hundreds of ways to overcome his mental illness, nothing had any lasting benefits. For years, he was content with the idea that at least he wasn’t suicidal anymore. He became very good at hiding his depression from his clients and colleagues.

Then, at the age of 48, Cliff tried psychedelics for the first time. Immediately, he felt younger, happier, and more hopeful for the future. It was as if he had been going through life with a straight-jacket on and could finally stretch his arms. He became more interested in psychedelics and decided to use increasing doses of psilocybin mushrooms over the course of a year to overcome his depression once and for all.

Like ‘magic mushrooms’, Tales from the Mushroom is a story of introspection, mystery, and whimsy. It is a powerful tale of one man’s looking into the abyss of depression and fighting the monsters that lie within.

I'm Cliff Hamrick, an author of fiction and non-fiction. My storytelling journey began when I was nine years old and started playing Dungeons and Dragons with my friends. We were too young to understand the rules, but the seed of telling exciting stories with characters that grew and developed over time was planted.

I began writing my own fiction as a way to tell stories in the genres that I love to read: fantasy, horror, and science fiction. My biggest influences are the 'weird' scifi and sword & sorcery stories from R.E. Howard, H.P. Lovecraft, E.R. Burroughs, and R.W. Chambers.

My non-fiction is related to my career as a counselor. Not only do I have a Masters of Arts in Counseling, but also a Masters of Science in Biology. My first career was in biology where I taught at Baylor University as well as worked on various textbooks.

I still work as a counselor in private practice in Austin, TX where I work with clients struggling with addictions, depression, and anxiety. My interests are as varied as my background. I love the outdoors and hiking in one of the greenest cities in the state. I stay active by practicing yoga multiple times a week. But, I also enjoy visiting the gun range and shooting small bits of lead through pieces of paper.

Please visit my website www.cliffhamrickwrites.com where you can join my reader's list and receive a free deleted scene from my first novel, Saga of the Scout.

I really enjoyed this one but not like some people expect from books like this.

People expect these epiphany moments from a book like this but life isn't like that. This books does an amazing job as it alternates between one mans experience with the mushrooms to technical information about the subjects. He has a biology background before his carrier as a therapist and that puts him in a unique situation to explain how it works from a science angle as well as the personal and profoundly emotional angles as well.

I know many men who should read this and any man reading this review who been looking inside themselves and needs help truly looking deeper should read this book first before looking for help from nature.
