The oft-forgotten discipline of fasting is a devotion of great usefulness that unfortunately has had a severe lack of information written about it and has garnered an abundance of misunderstandings and misinformation regarding it. In Understanding the Discipline of Fasting , the fourth of his Biblical Foundations for the Christian Faith series, Paul Washer repeatedly points the student to the Scriptures to expose these erroneous ideas and to help the people of God understand the proper place of fasting in the Christian life. Also included in these pages is an abridged and modernized work from the Scottish theologian Thomas Boston on fasting and humiliation.
Paul David Washer became a believer while studying at the University of Texas. He completed his undergraduate studies and enrolled at Southwestern Theological Seminary, where he received his Master of Divinity degree. After graduating, he moved to Peru and served there as a missionary.
Paul ministered as a missionary in Peru for 10 years, during which time he founded the HeartCry Missionary Society to support Peruvian church planters. HeartCry's work now supports over 165 indigenous missionaries in over 26 countries throughout Eastern Europe, South America, Africa, Asia, and the Middle East.
Paul now serves as one of the laborers with the HeartCry Missionary Society (www.heartcrymissionary.com). He and his wife Charo have three children: Ian, Evan, and Rowan.
Very insightful. Washer expects you to have your Bible alongside you as you work your way through this, malcontent with preaching, rather wanting the reader to conduct their own study and self-evaluate. There are questions littered throughout to assist in that regard. At the end of the day, Washer says a great deal while being cautious about treading into legalistic territory. He compares fasts to feasts, observing the infrequency and intentionality of these affairs, emphasising both aspects as crucial to the task at hand. He gives the contexts and causes for Biblical fasting, and he is very clear that there are right and wrong ways to fast. A thought-provoking book, and I was pleased to see that Washer translates well from preaching to writing, as many preachers cannot make the transition.
This was above and beyond what I expected. I learned so much and understand so much more clear the biblical truths in fasting and prayer. I 100% recommend this book and have ordered all of these workbooks.
