When a collection of short stories has as varied writers as Maria Edgeworth, Oscar Wilde, O Henry, Charles Dickens, Loe Tolstoy, and so on, it is bound to evoke different emotions from tragedy to tragi-comedy, pathos, irony, surprise endings and so on.

Three of my top favourites in the collection were – The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, The Deceiver and After Twenty Years. The first one has been made into a film and I am sure most of the readers are aware of it. The Deceiver is a poignant way in which a mother tries to steal three hours of widowhood from her daughter’s life. After Twenty Years has O Henry’s signature style twist in the tale.

However, I wish there was less of longer stories or stories more than 75 -100 pages which fall in the category of novellas. When one is reading a short stories collection, they expect the stories to be a well contained unit which can be finished in one sitting rather than 2-3 sittings.
