Life has finally gotten back to normal for the folks on the Shifting Sands Ranch - or as normal as it can be for a group of shapeshifters on the down low, but old habits die hard. When Dakota convinces Jax to bring home an eccentric gorilla-shifter who calls himself "Kong," they wonder whether they've finally bitten off more than they can chew. Meanwhile, Reporter Derek MacCaffrie needs a story, and the videotape he received of a supposed shapeshifter running wild in the mountains of Wyoming reeks of something sensational. Unfortunately, writing an exposé on the shifters may come at a higher price than he ever intended -- he might gain a Pulitzer, but lose his heart in the process. It's a war of shifter versus human as Dakota and Jax take on the world in a battle to keep their family together in this third book in the In Their Own Skins series, Uncaged. Previous books include Shifting Sands and Mark of Cain. Don't miss the three bonus short stories written in the same universe that are included in the volume - Glitter Palms, Divinity Park, and Killer Love.
This is continuation of the series, so it can not be read as a standalone. Four years have passed since the events in the book Mark of Cain. The ranch is prospering, everybody is happy. But what Jax and Dakota don't know is that their world is about to change irrevocably. When a gorilla shifter is rescued from a Florida zoo, everybody has doubts about the "unstable" man who calls himself Kong. The story is told from multiple POVs and has a bit of steam, a touch of humor and romance.
At the same time, a young yet ambitious reporter Derek MacCaffrie gets a video depicting a man shifting into a wolf. When he gets ridiculed for it by his boss, he decides to go and investigate it himself. From then on everything that could go wrong for him does. Alone and trapped in the dilapidated cottage the last thing he expects is to encounter a naked man who will change his way of thinking. The romance angle is cute. There is insta love, a bit of humor but their love story is not at the forefront of the book.
The villain was predictably vicious. The shifters exposure to the world was well written. I liked how both Jax and Dakota handled it. All in all, all loose end were tied, and the story was kind of short. It ended at 70% mark in the kindle. It was followed by a short story though. I liked the Shifting Sands ranch and their shenanigans. One thing that rankled though was the need for proofreading. One fact was mentioned in the beginning and then completely contradicted in the middle of the book. Otherwise, I had fun with Jax and his big pack of various shifters. The concept of carnivores and herbivores living together peacefully was one of my favorites in this series. As a whole, I recommend it. Copy received for my honest and unbiased review
An enjoyable & intriguing MM shifter romance & the continuation of the story from the first book “Shifting Sands” & the second book “Mark of Cain” into this book is smoothly done. The plot is well-written & interesting with different views from the various characters. The unique characters are likeable & quite impressive, well-developed & at times quite unpredictable. There is: various kinds of shifters, a safe haven (Shifting Sands Ranch), the alpha wolf shifter of the ranch (Jax), his alpha bear shifter mate (Dakota), a reporter (Derek MacCaffrie) determinate to discover the truth, a manipulative reporter & Derek’s boss (Marcy), a misunderstood gorilla shifter (Kong), twist & turns, intrigue, drama, secrets, deceit, devious plans, a rescue attempt, memories, family betrayal, distrust, jealousy, attractions, protectiveness, compromises, attempted abduction, confrontations, court cases, contentment, verbal banter, steamy scenes & a satisfying well-deserved conclusion. There are three quick-read bonus MM shifter romances included in this book. I enjoyed reading this MM shifter romance & would recommend it (& the series) to people who like to read this genre. “I received a complimentary copy, and this is my honest & voluntary opinion”
Kong is a gorilla shifter who is new to the ranch. He doesn't stay long. Once he leaves he meets Derek, a junior reporter determined to find proof and expose shape shifters. This story mainly centres around Kong. He has had a lonely life, yearning for more but reluctant to believe anyone would want him. Together Kong and Derek go back to the ranch. Chaos ensues.. I liked this story almost as much as the first two. There are still enemies to be wary of, again, old and new. The pack does it's best to stick together and come out whole in the end.
3 ½ stars Once more, the author gives multiple POVs for the readers to get to know new characters and reunite with old. While I like Kong and Derek, their story was weak when compared to others that have gone before. Jax and Dakota are a significant part of this book, the same as in books 1 and 2. I think that was a bit much for this particular book. Specific points had to be made by them, granted, but they overshadowed others who needed to be seen and heard. There are a lot of sexy times for the couples. I was somewhat numb to it all by this 3rd book, so I skimmed thru a lot of it. What I did read was spicy. ;-) Kong and Derek are a good couple. They just needed more of everything. I felt for Kong and what he had gone thru during his life, even shedding a few tears for him. JD is a precious, precocious toddler, and I enjoyed my time with him. The bad guy, or woman, in this case, takes the chance she is given and threatens their entire way of life. This is a strong storyline, but it did not have the flow that previous books had. Lack of editing caused a drop in enjoyment for me. I like the book. If there is a book 4, I hope I get a chance to read it.
BTW, there is bonus content at the end of the book. Good reading.
While I think this book fell a bit short compared to previous ones, it does provide an interesting continuation to the series and is worth reading if you read parts 1 and 2. Some new characters appear and others are revisited. Overall a 3,75 stars for me.
