God's Word for You

1 & 2 Timothy For You

Rate this book
Expository Bible-study guide to 1 & 2 Timothy that can be read as a book; used as a devotional; and utilized in teaching and preaching. Paul is reaching the end of his ministry. Timothy needs help in his. And so the apostle writes to his young friend and protege, urging him to guard the gospel, preach the gospel, and live the gospel. Phillip Jensen brings decades of ministry experience to bear on the pastoral letters of 1 and 2 Timothy, calling readers to do just what Timothy did—to love Christ and teach truth in our generation, and to teach others to do the same. This accessible, absorbing expository guide opens up this book for new and mature Christians alike. It is more applied than a typical commentary, making it a great resource for personal devotion, as well as useful for leading small group studies or sermon preparation.

My favourite commentary during my second experience preaching through 2 Timothy. Don’t look here for thorough textual or exegetical discussion, but excellent for interpretation and application. Jensen happily disagrees with the majority view at times, deploying his scholarly credentials with a light touch to make some convincing arguments. Recommended.

Love this series. Excellent for post study commentary and good discussion questions at the back of each section. Tim and I read this together after we studied each book and will be getting the Titus one shortly.

3.8/5.
Didn’t agree with everything in this book, but I really like this series (how the books are structured, that is) and I really like Phillip Jenson (and his brother Peter!). If one comes from the (confessional) Presbyterian tradition, the differences should be obvious enough to note.

This is one of the "God's Word for You" series I didn't like that much. The author didn't seem as engaging as some of the other authors of the series. Having said that, I bought this book because for years I got to the end of 1 Timothy chapter 2 and was thoroughly confused, and the author helped shed some light on that for me, so you could say the book did its job. I thought chapter 6 (on relationships within households) was good too.

I’ve slowly chipped away at this one over the course of leading a small group Bible study. I’ve read several of the books in this series but this one has been my least favorite so far. The questions at the end of each chapter were less thought provoking and often tied to the tangents that he brought up in the chapter rather than the text of Scripture. My biggest takeaway was the discussion of the mystery of godliness and how Christianity is different from other faiths and religions because Christ did the work for us, instead of the work needed to earn the favor of gods of other religions.

Not my favourite For You book. I think The Good Book Co need a companion book written by another author who has a less Sydney Anglican perspective. However, there were some gems within. Still worth a read.

I usually love this series but this is a bit of a mixed bag. It's very dry and lacking in illustration and at times application. Plus one of two interpretive decisions are questionable!

This is generally a good series, and Phillip Jensen is often helpful. This one... not so much. It - seemed to me at least - sloppily written and bitty. And Phillip just sounds like a grumpy old man at times - why take unnecessary pot shots at things? Of course there are some helpful bits, but this is one of the weakest GWFYs that I've looked at.

This is a good companion book while studying first and second Timothy. The last few chapters on 2nd Timothy 4 were really insightful.
