Authors Eshkar Erblich-Brifman and Lilach Keren-Grupper weave an action-packed mystery thriller with intriguing twists and turns that easily captivates the reader’s attention from the first chapter. The authors paint an adventurous and action-packed story in a very vivid and convincing way. In addition, the characters are drawn with great credibility and conviction. It’s a fast-paced novel that will keep you engaged from the first page to the last.
RIDING LIES had every element a good story should have. An intriguing plot, attention to detail, but best of all fleshed out, well-written and well-rounded character development. There’s an abundance of well-illustrated scenes that make you feel like you are right there in the story, and that’s something I really look for in a good book. The story flowed from scene to scene with ease, and the authors showed exceptional ability when it comes to storytelling.
I enjoyed the story and dialogue, and there were plenty of plot twists that I didn’t see coming that added to the book’s mystique. When I stopped reading to work, I found myself wondering what happened in the book, and replaying parts of the novel in my head to see if I could figure more out. It has been a while since I enjoyed a book this much. It’s a first-class mystery thriller with perfect pacing. Not much is as it appears here, which is just the way fans of thriller and suspense will want it! I’ll also add that it has a distinctly cinematic feel to it.
‘It was an illusion, and none of us noticed this illusion…’
Israeli authors Eshkar Erblich-Brifman, having s degree in psychology, and Lilach Keren-Grupper, with experience in melding mind with body and spirit and active in sports, have both published books on their own. This is their first co-authored book. Helene Hart translated RIDING LIES from Hebrew.
The writing style of these two talented authors is conversational and casual, a trait that adds credibility to their story of interlocking women’s lives. The flow of the story opens with the following introduction to Hagar, one of the three women involved in this tale. ‘Four forty-two. Preschool will be over in twenty minutes. And again, there’s no parking. Hagar circles the street time and again, cursing under her breath. It’s unbearable, the same story every day….Milan. She’s all but forgotten the short vacation. The daily race, the grinding routine, struck her mockingly the day she came come, to Israel.’ And Anat – ‘Suddenly she’s no longer Anat the Preschool Teacher but Anat the Biker, with an utterly – almost incomprehensible – different look.‘
In this manner we meet the three women of the story - Hagar, Anat, Orly – and their contrasting but equally frustrated coming together with the motorcycle instructor, Koby. The plot unravels in gradual fashion as described by the authors’ summary; ‘Three women fall in love with their bike riding instructor, and then they find out the truth. Three powerful women find themselves trapped in a sexual web woven by their riding instructor and are swept into a tsunami of emotions. Koby the biking instructor, seduces them, reigniting a sensuality that has long died in them. The women - very different yet similar, are all married with children, each very successful in their professions but fed up with their mundane lives. Once they discover that their weekly escape was nothing more than a game, they get together.’
This light-hearted novel falls comfortably into the Chick Lit genre – a very popular arena of books with a wide readership. The story is well written and addresses a number of social and feminist issues and does so very credibly. This should prove to be a very popular light read for summer.
The beginning of this book was great, moved fast with interesting characters. As the book continued, I found myself scanning the words and loosing interest. I was anticipating a twist at the end, which never happened.
At first I was all set to judge these 3 women who just seemed to all fall over their riding instructor who used the h out of them but - and a big but- as the reader gets to know each one of them and their lives there is no judgement. Three entirely different women with very different reasons for wanting to ride bikes find out they are not so different after all. And if the reader is honest with oneself can only recognize that any individual at any given time in their life will face some of the same things that these women did. It is how you handle it and where you go from it that makes all the difference. Was not too happy with the ending but again it was real and true to life so while I wanted a nice happy ending that is not always possible either.
Wonderful characters, intriguing points of view, three women charmed by the same man and their experiences. Moves along quickly, and the bike riding is so relatable. Finally, I enjoyed the Israeli setting and people.
