Ever since Juddie can remember, he has wanted to learn how to read and write. The nearest school, however, is many miles away, and Pa needs Juddie to help work their farm. Great story. I love old stories about hard work, love, and good family values.

Here are some possible talking points with your kids if they are young. There are some intense major life events that happen:

1. Juddie’s mom is really sick almost her whole pregnancy with Juddie’s sister. Juddie (11 years old) has to take the horses by himself into town to fetch the doctor. He’s never done it before. One of the horses fall and he hurts himself getting the house back on her feet. It’s a 4 hour trip in to town.

2. Juddie has other siblings that were born, but died as babies.

3. Juddie is really upset about losing his dog, but when he finds him, he makes a hard decision to leave the dog with the man and his daughter because he sees how much they love the dog and how much dog loves them. These people live further from town than Juddie and his family do.

4. There is a forest fire that threats Juddie’s home. His parents had left for town before they knew it was coming. Juddie has to take his 9 month old sister and get into a water well platform that his grandfather built for this very purpose. He stays there with his sister until the fire is out from the rain.

I want to read this to my son when he gets older. It's a great story of how to be a good man. Not only is it great storytelling, it teaches respect for parents, hard work, giving, responsibility, and the power of literacy.

I highly recommend it, especially if you have a boy!

We read it as a read aloud with my 8 year old son. We both enjoyed the story.

What a nonsense. The story takes place in a time where people still used carriages to go to town. Yet, the owner of the grocery store uses a h e l i c o p t e r to deliver flour???
