I wasn’t sure it was such a good idea to search the rooms, looking for who knows what, so I was debating on forgetting the whole thing and going back to bed, when I heard it. My heart stopped. The sounds of footsteps going downstairs. Downstairs. Oh God. What were they doing down there? I squeezed my eyes shut and counted to ten, telling myself to breathe. I opened my eyes and started for the downstairs. I stopped at the top of the stairs that led down into the darkness and I thought it looked darker than it had before. Don’t be a chicken I told myself. Be brave, be fearless. I straighten up and held my head high and take one step.
“What the hell are you doing?” a voice demands, from right behind me and I scream and lose my balance, my arms pinwheeling for a minute, I squeeze my eyes shut, waiting for the fall, but nothing happens. A hand grabs my shirt and pulls me forward and I tumble into a hard chest. My heart pounding a wild drumbeat.
