Nicolette is a Demon. Headstrong, tactless, and exceptional. She has one fear: Betrayal.
David is a Shadow. A quiet and skilled assassin who has lived the past hundred years hiding from his kind and the oppressive culture they live by.
When David leaves Trinity and Nick behind, she follows to set things right. What she finds is far more than she bargained for. As the past creeps up on them both, they must stick together to ensure their future.
Trust between them has always been a fragile thing, and the hardships they face have the power to either strengthen their bond or irrevocably destroy it. Thrown into a pit of intrigues and mortal danger, they will discover that true courage means relying on one another.
But will it be enough to save them?
***Urban Fantasy with a dash of Paranormal Romance. Third in series.***Trigger warning: Mentions of abuse***
Victoria Larque writes Paranormal Romance and Urban Fantasy. Her love for the genre is rooted in the fact that she has rules to go by, but can bend and even break them if need be.
She was born and raised in the wonderful country of Namibia and is now residing and working in Germany where she lives with her husband.
Victoria has learned the amazing craft of a car-mechanic. But her passion is writing, telling stories and dreaming up impossibilities.
When she gets home from work she writes. On the weekends she writes.
Her goal is to, one day, be able to do nothing but indulge her passion.
I've said it more often, but I'll happily repeat it again. Victoria Larque is the kind of author writing the kind of stories I wanna read. I have to admit that this series might not be my favorite books by her and yet I'm reading each installment with a lot of joy. Last week it was time to dive into this third book in the series, focussing on two other characters and not on Mist and Daphne. I was really curious if I was gonna like that.
I ended up really liking this new couple. Especially David was a lovely character to get to know better. It was amazing to see him return to his childhood home, with all the traumas and memories. It was even more amazing to get to see this community up close, to see their powers and strengths, to understand their society and why David wanted to leave so badly and was so afraid to return. And therefore it's impossible not to start loving him more and more.
Although Nic is growing and learning the most in this story. We've gotten to know her as tough, harsh, afraid of emotions and feelings. It's clear she has been scarred by her past and in this book we get to see what has hurt her so badly and why she has become who she is nowadays. However, we most of all get to see how Nic learns that not everyone is the same and that some people are worth loving and trusting and are worth being vulnerable with.
The main storyline is a little on pause in this book. Of course, it's not on hold completely. In the prologue we understand that the villain is still scheming and trying to get what she has been after for quite some time already. It's also making a very brief appearance towards the finale of the story, but it's not what this book is about. I actually quite enjoyed this sort of calm in the storm, this moment a lot of characters got a little time to breath and recover.
This book was freaking fantastic! I absolutely adored the first book, I thought the second book was even better but this one is the bestest! I can't even imagine what the author will come up with next. This book focuses on Nick, the demoness and David the shadow. And although Daphne and Mistrael are not the focus of this story, they still get their time and the big picture continues. However, I can't even express how much I loved reading about Nick and David. I loved both of them from the start and now getting to know them better was a special treat. They both have their stories, their past, their pain, and their hangups, but somehow together they overcome their issues and move on to much better things thanks to their love and mutual respect. What I also loved about this story is that we finally see the elusive Shadow Colony and the atmosphere in which David grew up. Let me tell you, it is harsh on steroids. There is nothing pleasant about any of it. And I can't say much without giving spoilers but wherever Daphne and her chosen family show up, big changes are coming. The author did a fantastic job here. In general, the plot is fantastic, and the way the author follows each line of the plot and interlacing them into the big picture is absolutely amazing. There is so much happening in this series! And the author's writing, which was brilliant from the start, is only getting better. Oh and the villains! There are many, and they all want Daphne, or they aim to hurt someone she cares about to achieve their goal. This is so well done! I enjoyed every second of it. This is such a fantastic series, filled to the brim with fantastic characters, good and bad, cause they are all so well developed, I seem to end up devouring each book in one sitting and can't get enough. This is without a doubt one of my favourite series ever and I can't wait to read more. I would suggest reading this series in order: The Soul Reaver (Myre Series Book One), The Soul Reaver Alloy (Myre Series Book Two), The Demon Shadow Play (Myre Series Book Three), and two more books have been announced, The Seraph Wings of Ash (Myre Series Book Four) and The Soul Reaver Nightmare (Myre Series Book Five).
First time writing a review about a book, I don't really know where to start. I admit when I started reading this book I was worried I wouldn't enjoy it as much as the previous ones. I love Daphne and Mist's dynamic, Reaver Manor and all the possibilities that come with them. So when I saw that book three was about Nick and David mostly and didn't take place in Trinity, I thought I'd read it to continue my journey through the Myre world but without actually enjoying it... Could I have been more wrong about it ?! Nick and David are so much more complicated characters that I first thought. They work together perfectly. I loved discovering their relationship, their past and how much they love each other. Thank you Victoria for creating this amazing universe, Trinity is something amazing, the characters you create are extremely well written, full of complexity, human (even if clearly they are not). And yet with Shadow Play you managed to create a whole new world inside this universe. The Mountain and the shadows that live here gave it a new breath. (same universe, completely different vibe, both amazing) As always the epilogue makes me want to start the next book immediately (lucky me I already have it). See you in a review for Wings of Ash.
