Solids, Liquids and Gases

Rate this book
Solids, Liquids and Gases has 13 experiments carefully chosen by the Ontario Science Centre. With minimal supervision, children can explore the three states of matter, what makes each state unique and how matter changes from a solid to a liquid to a gas through evaporation, condensation, melting and freezing. Filled with bright photographs, the Starting with Science series provides valuable lessons about basic science for five to eight year olds.

This fun informational text reads like a recipe book for science experiments. It is a great content model text to show students as they learn to write their own experimental procedures. The word choice and conventions (i.e., bullets, numbering, etc.) highlight the importance of being precise in descriptions and layout for experiments. Organizationally, it includes the materials, procedures and guiding questions in kid-friendly language. As a science activity, students could populate an experiment form that uses terms from the scientific method, matching it to the language the book uses.
