Trinity of Mind #2

Breaking Glass

Rate this book
Two voodoo witches, caplatas, now hunt for the druids—specifically Jacob Stevens. The Trinity of Mind, a permanent mental connection between Jake, Kendra, and Alexis, could become their downfall. Jake constantly sees his now hideous self through the girls’ eyes. With the help of Eldra, an aged druidess mentor, Alexis has found a way to hide her dangerous thoughts, despite Jake’s mental prying. The Skull Shadows, a dangerous secret society, attack Jake through his sister, O’Brien, and others he must protect. The caplatas kidnap Kendra and trap a portion of her spirit in a jar. Jake and Alexis, aided by Luiz and Eldra, must stop the caplata’s death curse, rescue Kendra, and free her spirit. At the same time, a being older than our world helps Jake learn what it means to be a protector, giving him a task that could cost him and his friends their lives. Will they all survive?

Great continuation from the first book. Great sequel in general. I am eagerly awaiting for a 3rd book in the series.

I'm sad to have to write this review, but I feel like the readers deserve to know what they're getting into.

In the first book we found out things about Alexis' past, which was already something that was handled very poorly by the author. In the second book we get deeper into it, and at this point this is not something I can just ignore.

Sexual abuse and things related to it is a very sensitive topic that has to be handled with the utmost care, especially in books that are NOT intended for an adult audience. Even though the book is listed as 'new adult' in the Amazon page, the tone of this series is much closer to YA. There is not a single swear word and they say "hecking" and "fricking" instead... and yet somehow the author feels it's appropriate to describe one of the main characters getting r***d repeatedly by her grandfather and multiple other people at the age of 13, and give her a disgusting tattoo on her genital region. It came COMPLETELY out of left field what with the tone of the rest of the series, and the depravity of it is something that even a grimdark Abercrombie book would shy away from.

So the first issue is merely having these things in the book. The second, they were handled awfully. The author defines Alexis by her sexuality in every way possible. She dresses skimpy, flirts constantly, and the only symptom of her trauma is her having 'Stockholm syndrome', in love with a vampire who r***d her with 'kindness'. There are so many things wrong with this, I won't go into it because I'd be here all day. At best, it's insensitive. At worst, it can be trauma triggering for real victims to see someone make such an uninformed and a mocking parody of a serious issue.

The third issue and warning is about the "romance" part of the story. Dear reader, how do you feel about the concept of cuckold? Because it's going to happen a lot in this book. The main character is mentally connected to the two girls, and EVERY TIME a good looking dude appears on the pages, they will lust after them (even Alexis, whose trauma is completely ignored again). They find the main character hideous. They tell him he's pathetic (yes, that's an actual line from the book, "You are pathetic."). They remain emotionally distant, but at least the book mentions they love him a few times. Because that makes this all okay, right? Ugh.

Actions speak louder than words, and every single action the two love interests make show they loathe the main character, and they love other men. I stopped reading for a while when Alexis wanted to MARRY the vampire who I mentioned previously, and had to suffer through a front row seat of paragraphs and paragraphs of description how she loved him so much, how alluring and handsome he was, et cetera. Combined with the issue about her poorly (or not-at-all) handled trauma, reading this book made me physically sick. Suffice to say, I did not finish it.

These are things that I just don't want to read about. This is why I mostly avoid the Grimdark genre. But to see it appear in a YA (or NA) book with such poor taste... it felt like a slap in the face to everything good the Fantasy genre stands for. I'm upset and disgusted, and I'm disappointed because this could've been an incredible series had the author made different decisions.

I absolutely love the mental connection between Jake, Kendra, and Alexis. This was so unique. Especially the unfiltered thoughts. They way the characters interact may be the best I've ever read.

This second book was more action packed than the first.

The magic world expands. I loved the introduction of Coyote and Ariel.

My eyes moistened near the end. Ok, 1 tear dropped. I don't cry.

I really like the book. Still I have issues with it. I really don’t like it that the main character isn’t healing. Also the tempo of the story is too fast to let the characters develop. I hope the author will let some real mainstream life into the next book. That is something I really liked bout the first book. Real life and no splotchy skin. There is magic, healing potions, healing stones and our main character can do nothing about speeding up or augment his healing?!
Still I look forward to the next episode in this serie and hope the issues I have with it are dess as my with.
