She’s a prideful pampered princess, and he’s a handsome humbled humanitarian. Separately, they had their plans and falling in love wasn’t one of them.
Summer McKoy
“I had it all figured out. Well, my mother did, and that was fine because she’s been that way with me since birth. My plan was simple - secure the only position available after completing my summer internship, accepting a job reserved for me. All I had to do was show up. How hard could that be, right? I’m focused enough, I’m bright enough, hell... I have the assuredness of one trillion beauty queens and a smile that would blind the sun. With men, I was just as sure. I knew the prototype of man I was born to end up with. Knew everything about him down to the social class his family needed to be in because hierarchy matters to me. And Jayce Martin? He didn’t have the clout to check off a single box on my ideal partner list. Jayce shouldn’t even hold a pencil anywhere near my list! Then why on earth is it a challenge keeping my mind off this guy… or my heart from wanting to love him?”
Jayce Martin
“My family has always been my priority. Every move I ever executed, every choice I ever made, my intentions have always been to put them in a better position. So, my plan was simple - secure a property for my mother and my younger twin siblings by landing a coveted position at one of the top law firms in the country with a focus on pocketing their sign-on bonus. I planned to intern there after graduation. This was a chance of a lifetime! People always said I was smart, but opportunities like this one bypassed guys like me often. I mean... the fact they selected me out of a pool of thousands of applicants was my life’s plot twist. But here I am, my mind sharpened, my goals clear, and the job mine if I prove that I’m worthy. Then why is it difficult to keep my head in the game and my mind off this girl named Summer McKoy?”
Believed to be the gateway through where all sins enter the mortal soul, pride wears the crown as the sin that gives rise to all other sins. If the vices were a tree, pride would be the root.
What will happen when pride, the sin of which all sins come from, falls in love with its opposite, a virtue, humility?

Brookelyn wrote her first short story when she was a sophomore in high school. Back then she discovered how using her experience as a teen living in Brooklyn to create romantic shorts was just as exciting to her as retail shopping and going on dates. After starting her first semester of college two years later, Brookelyn’s creative writing became more of a hobby and something to do to escape the stress of midterms and finals. Now in her 30s as a freelance writer, penning short stories and novellas is her everything. While her experience with writing has evolved for the better, her undying love for creating fiction remains unchanged. Brookelyn's focus is on creating contemporary women's fiction with characters based in urban settings. Her stories chronicles the emotional journeys and erotic experiences of women today through her characters and the scenarios they're thrown into.
The motivation behind her brand of writing has a lot to do with what she discovered storytelling provided for her - an escape. Her goal with her work is to create characters and urban worlds that offer a great escape for fiction readers looking for a break from the daily grind of adulting and who prefer to relax with good books and short stories. When she’s not freelancing, doing yoga, or showing her husband and toddler lots of love, she can be found sitting at her computer desk, with her legs folded, and a cup of coffee (or a glass of wine) at arm’s reach as she types or edits her latest short or novella.
4.5✨- I loved Summer and Jayce’s story! From the very beginning, I questioned Summer’s behavior but once I learned the “why” things made perfect sense. She has been lied to for her entire life, working hard for the approval of her father. Jayce was sooo dreamy! He’s a protector and confident. Jayce and Summer attended the same university and were both selected for a prestigious internship at a law firm. The internship is the missing link to Jayce getting his family out of their living situation. It was so clear early on that Summer and Jayce liked each other, but they were the complete opposite. I had such a great time with this book, understanding how pride can wreck havoc on lives if you allow it to. The chemistry, character development, and heavy dose of humble pie was much appreciated.
Pride (The Love is Cure, Vol. 1 Vices & Virtues book 1) by Brookelyn Mosley is about recent Langston University graduates Summer McKoy and Jayce Martin. Summer has spent the last 4 years ignoring Jayce’s heated looks. Too bad Summer and Jayce are both interning at Bloom & Associates, it makes it downright impossible for Summer to continue to ignore him. Jayce comes from humble beginnings and Summer a silver spoon but you know what they say about opposites. Summer seems like the uppity mean girl but it’s obvious she’s been brainwashed. Summer’s mom tries to live through her, she tells Summer the most ridiculous things that she of course internalizes. Summer’s mom is a genuine mess, her ideologies are terrible and contradictory considering her own situation. She’s the root of Summer’s false pride! Jayce is a sweetheart, the love and dedication he shows his family is admirable. He’s attracted to Summer but he doesn’t let her step all over him and he calls her out on her terrible views. He’s humble but he has a quiet confidence that fills a room. Plus he’s oh so good at humbling Summer 😉 It’s hard not to love Jayce, he’s kind and 10 toes down always. Even when the thing between them is undefined he still looks out for Summer. I really enjoyed this story, of course Summer & Jayce get hot and heavy emphasis on heavy 👀🥵 🤤 But they also have substance, in their most intimate moments they bare it all!! I look forward to reading more from this series!
Baby, let me tell you something, Brookelyn took me for a ride with this story. When she says that point of these books is to hate main characters in the beginning and then come to love them at the end, she truly meant that.
I HATED Summer throughout this book. I despise stuck up heffas like her that think just because they come from money that they’re better than everyone else. She was so stuck up and full of herself. Don’t get me started on her mama. She was the same and wanted to run Summer’s life only because she was hiding a BIG secret. Now, I can say that I did actually begin to like her towards the end once Jayce started to humble her and life started to smack her in the face. I guess growth is possible!
Jayce so far is probably my favorite MMC of this series. He was a young ball player that was motivated and wanted to get his family out of the hood by becoming a lawyer. Jayce’s reason for wanting to become a lawyer definitely hit home.
I couldn’t understand why Summer and Jayce were so attracted each other, but like they say .. opposites do a attract and somehow that attraction between the two was intense and only magnified when they both were going for the same law internship.
PRIDE had so many layers which is why it was a good story. This is my second book of the series and I am definitely enjoying it.
Loved this book so much! Character development, engaging storyline, right pace, fiery chemistry and book bae Jayce as the icing on top are the strengths of this book. While I wanted to see more commentary of events in the law office I was still satisfied with the coupling of Summer and Jayce. Summer was a handful and more...whew. Yet Jayce was unstoppable in his feelings and pursuit of her. I don't even know how Veronika missed because it was so clear! On to book 2 in this series. This author is so underrated and truly deserves recognition for her amazing works.
I love love this book it was an amazing read. I’m not surprised in the least because Brookelyn always delivers an astounding read. Jayce was so goddamn amazing and so kind and lovable. Thank goodness for a man that can hold his own in every arena. I loved Summer also she was definitely a product of her environment that her mother created. But I hate that her father’s wife was so damn evil and bitter that you would allow a man to deny and care for his child. So freaking amazing this was and I can’t wait to read what’s next.
This was such a humbling, sweet love story. I enjoyed it from start to finish! And although Summer was a handful, I empathized with her circumstances. And just like Jayce, I saw beyond the shallow pretense she tried to portray, to the genuine value underneath!
Summer was...something else. Honestly I feel like if the things that came out of her mouth weren't so ridiculously and outrageously rude and condescending...that they were actually funny, I don't know that I would have been able to enjoy this story.
I get that to story was supposed to be about Pride and how different people wear and weild their pride, but she was JUST...I mean JUST too much. Some of the things she would say...OUT LOUD to Jayce made me seriously question (like other characters in the book) just what it was he saw in her that made him want to be around her. They say you can be the most gorgeous person on the outside but if your inside is rotten, then no amount of good looks can make you appear attractive. And while I don't think Summner is rotten on the inside by a LONG stretch, some of her views and ideas about other people and their relation to her, didn't exactly make her the most likeable person.
I say all that to say...Brookelyn did a great job of pushing Summers ridiculousness JUST over the edge enought that I found her to be more funny than annoying and so it wasn't hard for me to at least start to like her and root for her and Jayce in this story.
Thats it..thats all. I just wanted to vent about how much I didn't like Summer to end up liking her :)
I think this is my first read from this author. If the rest of the series continues to be as good as this first one then I'm totally down for checking out the rest of the Virtues.
In the beginning, Summer's personality left a lot to be desired. After being watered with the right kind of love, it was a joy to see her grow into a kind, giving, and compassionate young lady.
Jayce was raised right! He was patient, kind, smart, and brave. Oh and the way he put it on poor Summer made it impossible for her to do anything besides bend at his will.
Jayce living in his truth what just what Summer needed to drop her prideful facade and find the fulfillment and joy that she deserved.
OMG I loved this book. I love a good frenemies to lovers book and this book was that and so much more. Sumner saw Jayce as an enemy simply based on his background and her perception of him. In all actuality she positioned him as an enemy to fight her attraction to him. Jayce was initially attracted to Summer of course because of her looks and body but after working together at BBA he saw there was something more to her than the superficial. A perfect coming together from frenemies, to sex buddies, to lovers, to happily ever after. This was my first read from thus author but I will definitely be checking out more of her work starting with book 2 of this series.
I loved the opposites attract storyline of this book. It was strange how Summer and Jayce wanted each other from the first time that they saw each other four years prior. Jayce was a family oriented man who was smart, handsome and would do anything for his family. Summer was a spoiled princess who was lied to all of her life. It took a date with an arrogant man, a trip to the projects and the truth about her mother and father to really humble herself and realize her love for Jayce. Definitely a book worth reading.
Really cute story. I loved Jayce and his ability to disarm Summer. I wish it was explained more how Summer came to like doing charity work. That had to come from some experience, no matter how small, but considering her opposing upbringing. Since it was her only redeeming quality, it seemed important to explain. I was glad to see her father come around, but would've liked to see his apology described. Overall it was a good read and I would read it again.
I enjoyed reading Summer and Jayce’s story it was quite charming. Summer was unapologetically confident, intelligent, and had been born with a silver spoon type of upbringing. Jayce on the other hand, had the responsibility of being the eldest child of a single mother. Jayce’s top priority is to help his mom and siblings move to a better environment. When Jayce and Summer finally connect after only seeing and interacting with each other from afar, sparks fly every which way!
Same city/college, different worlds - opposites attract but they aren’t that different. Summer and Jayce expressed their pride and humility differently. Loved the consistency from Jayce and how he stayed true to himself and his goals. Jayce was definitely the person that could handle Summer. The highlight was the connection between Summer and Jayce’s sister. The secret definitely needed to be revealed because it helped Summer become her own person; the mom is VERY shallow and needs to work on herself. Will definitely read the other books in the series.
I really like the start of this new series. Summer's in a class, lane, planet, and atmosphere all by herself and there's nothing that anyone can say nor do to make her think any differently of herself. Sadly, her motivation was for all the wrong reasons. Jayce was a hard worker and a breath of fresh air that brought some humility into Summer's world. It's okay to have confidence but pride is something else.
Opposites really do attract. This book was the epitome of beautiful. Nothing short of amazing. Summer and Jayce were absolutely perfect for each other. Seeing Summer step out of her mother’s shadow and into to the unknown was so beautiful. This book showcased extensive character development and I loved that. You could literally see the changes as the chapters went on. I enjoyed every minute of this book. 10/10 highly recommended and I look forward to more stories with this dynamic from you.
Summer and Jayce were so cute together. That Summer was a true narcissist in the beginning but I still loved her. Thank goodness Jayce was a patient man. A lesser man would have left my girl. I will be reading the next book. I really enjoy the main character being imperfect/heavily flawed person and then them slowly changing for the better. It makes the story more inspiring to me. Great read and on to the next book.
Jayce and Summer gave me the feels. They came from different backgrounds, opposite ends of the spectrum in regards to family dynamics. But gosh almighty they belonged together. A complex, story well written with a HEA. The chemistry between Summer and Jayce is off the charts. This is a good read.
I’m the beginning of the story I was not feeling Summer. She was giving me all types of eye rolling vibes, but once her character developed throughout the story I understood her. I grew to love her character and confidence. I laughed and cried while reading. Good chemistry and good vibes. Must read. This is a beautiful story between Jayce and Summer.
I only gave it 4 stars because of her mother controlling her life and making her into an uppity person. Babes you graduated with honors, you have every right to pop your ish. but we all got issues and problems whether it’s family, career, friend or maybe just the world against you.
Pride was so good!!it was the perfect mix of everything. I love how opposites attracted in this book and how he was able to get her to not be so shallow and a little more realistic. I’m not gonna lie in the beginning she really got on my nerves but by the end I loved her.
I loved this story. Stuck up, bourgeois girl grew up with a silver spoon in her mouth and laid back guy from the hood. Opposites attract but love was definitely in the air. I loved the characters and easy flow of the writer's penmanship. Definitely recommend
I loved everything about this love story...Jayce is defiantly a mans man...he never let Summer “run” the show. I love them together and hope we get to check in with them.
I wasn’t liking Summer all that much in the beginning but then I remembered the title of this book in the series and considered myself warned….. Brookelyn got me RIGHT together in the synopsis! Proceeds to next book…. Lust
OMG, Summer and Jayce’s relationship was so cute!! Summer was a piece of work, but it worked for her. I don’t want to give anything away, so I’ll just say read it, with patience for Ms. Summer, but you will enjoy it!!
I loved me some Jayce in this story. And glad Summer got some Truth and came to her senses!! Mother's like Priscilla deserve they but whipped dictating and controlling her daughter's life all this time with a lie.
Summer was doing the absolute most. She was getting on my last nerve. Jayce was so patient and understanding. Whew, he was God sent. I’m so glad Summer learned such a valuable lesson and decided to choose herself.
Jayce is a sweet heart. One of my favorite characters. I am glad that he did not give up on Summer. Summer needed an eye opener to see that she was not better than, but different from her love of her life.
My main man Jayce, is book bae for real. He was such a sweetheart. I loved his dedication to his family. Now little Ms. Summer left a lot to be desired of course but at least she got it together by the end of the book. Good book and well written.
Disregarding the internalized racism, classism and some other ism’s that I can’t name it was an okay book. The end was rushed so you couldn’t even enjoy the character development. I lowkey skimmed the story
