Rate this book
Maggie Flournoy runs a pawn shop for magical objects, but sometimes things can get out of hand.

This boxed set of paranormal cozy mysteries — more than 140,000 words — includes the first Pentacle Pawn trilogy and the prequel:

The Sea Turtle Spell (prequel): Maggie’s witchy family runs a pawn shop for magical objects in New Orleans. One of her relatives killed her husband – and her grandmother’s cat is ready to snitch.
The Blue Amber Spell : Maggie moves to the desert resort city of Scottsdale, Arizona, but life is complicated. There's a dead body in the lobby and a tiger that’s materialized in the basement. Oh, and her late husband is back. It’s going to be a long day.
The Viking Horn Spell: Maggie's nemesis Penelope is back, and an ancient drinking horn causes witchy chaos.
The Dragon Puzzle Spell: The final installment in the Pentacle Pawn trilogy concludes with a frantic battle of wits and magic — and a showdown of prehistoric proportions in the Superstition Mountains.

Pentacle Pawn Boxed Set 1 - 4 is my first read by this author and I almost didn't make it past the first chapter; main character is painful with her behavior. Yet, I read on and found a well told, interesting, intriguing mystery. I love that it is set in NOLA and there are witches. It is great to read about witches that are true to themselves and accept who they are. Give me Samatha Stevens anyday. The location changes to Arizona near the end of the first book.

I appreciate the fact that the young witch is "modern" without the usual stupidity so common today of angrily telling people she is an independent, strong woman, which is not necessary when true - it shows. Also, the men were treated with respect; yes, we can live with them and they do not represent bondage.

The Sea Turtle Spell #1 - Sad start to the series but I like the storylines and the ancient history; the author did well for this old historian. I did like all the characters and since this is the first book, I expect them to develop more with time. There is good suspense, which is hard for me to find in modern books. The writing style is conversational and no negativity against anyone or thing. Pleasant but good reading. 4*

The Blue Amber Spell #2 - This story picks up five (or 12, a lie?) years later in Scottsdale, AZ. The years are confusing, time in AZ, years since John's death, etc. Otherwise, this is an intriguing, interesting and action packed addition. The pace is fast and there are a few neat items and kinks in this easy to read mystery. Good support characters, plenty of magic and some humor makes for an interesting getaway. 4*

The Viking Horn Spell #3 - This story picks up a few months later. Oops, got the time wrong again. Interesting, intriguing with good storylines and characters. Probably my favorite because if Barry and the auroch. 4*

The Dragon Puzzle Spell #4 - The author makes me laugh with her inability to remember time spans. The old and new storylines blend into a substantial read with all the activities and action in this fast pace end. 4*

Maggie Flournoy runs a pawn shop for magical objects. Included here is the trilogy and prequel for your enjoyment. The set includes: The Sea Turtle Spell (Prequel), The Blue Amber Spell, The Viking Horn Spell, and The Dragon Puzzle Spell. Each book will focus on a mystery surrounded by magic and a murder to be solved. Below is a review of the Prequel containing background information to set the tone of the series.

*** Reviewing “THE SEA TURTLE SPELL” ***
Returning from a visit to a bar to catch up with a former colleague, Marguerite Flournoy (“Maggie”) found her husband, John Spencer, lying across the threshold as she stepped into the alcove. The police told her later that the LED bulb above the front door was unscrewed, but she hadn’t noticed that at the time. Her cousin Aaron raced down the stairs – he had already called 9-1-1.

Maggie is a witch (and a physicist which gives her an interesting perspective) whose family runs the Pentacle Pawn in New Orleans, a shop in the back part of their home which dealt in magical objects. Before shock could dull her thinking, she took note of John’s body, seeing a red rose in his lapel – he never would have worn that? She touched his cheek and felt a magical residue where a spell had been used on him. And she noted the terror on his face before the paramedics moved her away. Sure that medicine had no answers for her, Maggie needed to know how he died and Aaron accompanied her to the hospital. But the more she thinks about everything, the more she returns to her initial feeling that one specific member of the family is to blame. Will she track down the real killer? Or is there a surprise still to come?

The powerful always want more.

Another great read. The plot is now based in Arizona where she has set up her own version of Penacle Pawn after the death of her husband at the hands of one of her family. The characters are richer and more real.
Her shop is proving to be a success. One part open in the daytime to the normal public and one part opened later for the gifted in the community. When a young woman asks her to hold a chunk of blue amber she doesn't know what she is setting herself up for. The young woman's mother had just died, apparently from a heartattack but there is no reason for it, and she thinks her brother wants the amber to be able to gain her mother's powers. Another death, a handsome new client, the ghost of her husband and a powerful witch (whose daughter is working at the shop) are mixed into a deathly game of 'grab the amber'. Why is the witch so interested in the amber? How far will she go to get it? Her team, made up of friends and Daisy, have to come up with a way to stop not only the witch but the brother. Will they succeed?

This is a paranormal cozy mystery box set that was very entertaining. I do admit, it took me a bit to get into it, but after a time, it grew on me. Each book in the set is a complete story arc pertaining to one mystery. Once that one is solved, then the next book begins with a new mystery with the same characters.

Good characters, engaging story line, detailed descriptions were a bit too wordy at times (could have used a bit of tightening up), but all in all, entertaining.

Written as a 1st person, single pov.

Would I recommend this series? Yes

Prequel and the trilogy, a good bundle of books to have to read. The prequel tells of how Maggie ends up running the family pawn shop, which is full of magical items. The rest of the trilogy continues over a time span, starting with the death of her husband in Book 1. This author is new to me and she writes in a different but good way from the other cozies that I have read. I did enjoy her work and she offers a different perspective on witches and the like. Full of emotion, well written, with some moments that made me smile and several that made me sad.

I received an ARC from Booksprout and this is my honest opinion

The is the first time I have read anything from this author. The storylines are good, well thought out, interesting and inventive. I love the fun, quirky characters and how they come together in crisis. The author takes the time to explain some of the intricacies of magical aspects of the books. The only thing I didn't like was the error in timelines between the books and how the last book kind of just ended, a little more closure would've been nice for the main character and her dead husband. I will definitely look for other works by this author, quite enjoyable!
