August 28, 2019Let’s talk about oxymorons for a moment. Jumbo shrimp. Bittersweet. Deafening silence. Millennial Baby Boomer. One of these is not like the others. That’s because Bob Fisch, former CEO of fast fashion retailer rue21, has built an enterprise on being the Millennial Baby Boomer.
He makes no claim to the former title, a bona fide Boomer at the age of 69, but in some ways he is an honorary Millennial, as Fisch has learned to listen to employees in their 20s. Fisch believes that he can teach these young people business and that they can teach him about the ever-changing world around him. He shares this philosophy, as well as a number of lessons from his time as a mentor (and his time, decades prior, as a mentee) in Fisch Tales: The Making of a Millennial Baby Boomer (Forbes Books).
The thesis of Fisch Tales is that despite the two generations that, along with Gen X, dominate the workforce, seemingly fundamentally opposed, Millennials and Baby Boomers are already equipped with the tools they need to transcend the generation divide. Through conversation and mutual mentoring they can arrive at a mutual understanding. Although Baby Boomers might have, in the past, considered Millennials to be overly ambitious or even entitled, Millennials might argue that they only feel entitled to things such as a living wage and a fair shot at climbing the corporate ladder.
Fisch, who has assembled a team of Millennials to coach him on the issues faced by the young and old alike, is cognizant of this and aims to remedy the perceived generational rift.

Fisch Tales provides a fresh take on how to have a successful modern career with key concepts such as having a vision, being confident, having a mentor, and being a disruptor. I liked how each concept in the book had specific lessons/advice that were supported by real life experiences by Fisch, his colleagues, or his friends. I liked how the book tackled some more controversial issues like how women are addressed in the office. I also thought input from others (Millennials) that was included in the book made it more well rounded.
