‘Sport is unique in the passion and emotion it evokes’

New Zealand author Dave Tomlinson has in earlier books taken us on places Around the World in 80 Tales, offered tips on budget travel, offered spiritual suggestions, a history of Leeds United, and an overview of famous sports victories. Now he turns to the interesting subject of sports controversies, sharing 25 stories as the UNLEVEL PLAYING FIELDS. As he states, ‘One of the reasons we love sport is it provides us with a simple clarity. It removes the frustrating shades of grey that often seem to dominate our daily lives to a point where we don’t know is we’re winning, losing or just getting by. In sport, a scoreboard will show the clear winner, with most results determined relatively quickly. Even full seasons reach their eventual conclusion and the champion is crowned. But what happens when the result isn’t so clear?’

With that question Dave delves into famous sporting controversies and shares the following – ”The word ‘controversy’ can be defined as something that creates much discussion and debate, often involving feelings of anger or disapproval. And so it is for a sporting controversy, where those feelings are usually expressed by passionate fans or even entire nations. Human error will always be a factor in sport. Passes will be dropped and easy shots missed, but nothing infuriates fans quite like officiating blunders and blatant cheating, And nothing arouses their curiosity more than circumstances so unusual that nobody is quite sure how the moment will be resolved.’

What follows is an inside view of sporting controversies in almost every sport – baseball, the Olympics, cricket, marathons, figure skating, tennis, swimming, boxing, motor racing - true stories of individuals and teams that leave us amazed. For every sports fan this is a resource for gaining in depth information on the famous and challenging controversies that have caused such consternation. A well-written, very fine book, rich in good-to-know facts.
