MY THOUGHTS ON THIS BOOK

I so much enjoyed this second book in the Sugar Sands Series. Song of Sugar Sands is Acadia and Peter’s story. The two met in college, each wanting to share their faith. The two have struggles dealing with every day life, and strive to overcome them. Especially Acadia, she feels she has done to many bad things to actually be a pastor’s wife, and Peter is determined to share his faith with the world.

This story has some sweet characters, Acadia being my favorite! I enjoyed watching their lives as they grew in their walk with the Lord and their love for each other. This is truly a sweet and clean Romance that those enjoying a good Romance will want to read. In addition to the Romance, you will find encouragement, forgiveness and learning how to freely love those who love you! This one gets a Four stars from me!

A special thanks to the author/publisher for a copy of this book. I am not required to write a positive review, the opinions here are mine alone. I am disclosing this with my review in accordance with the Federal Trade Commission’s 16 CFR, Part 255.

How do I start this review without crying? I have been shedding tears hours after finishing a story that reached deep into my soul. The author is incredible at sharing a story that spans a period of a young couple as they graduate college and marry. At first I wasn’t sure if Acadia would really marry Peter. She has doubts right up until the preacher pronounced them husband and wife.

Acadia seems in turmoil through most of the story. I began to think of her as “Doubting Thomas.” She wasn’t very encouraging to Peter as he begins his journey as a new pastor of a church. I did understand how Acadia felt she was never good enough for her parents and that did cause problems throughout the story. In her heart she wanted to believe that God loved her, but something was holding her back. I realized she was dealing with guilt from her past and insecurity that made her run every time there was a crisis. Not wanting to face her own problems only distanced herself further from her husband and God.

Peter was easy to like with his compassion for others. He is very patient with Acadia and wants to show her how much she is loved by many. Peter does have his own hurdles to face as members of the church don’t support the changes he wants to make. Oh how I wanted to tell some of those people to stop being so judgmental and set in their ways. The author does a great job of letting us see how being a pastor is difficult at times. His personal life is starting to make him lose focus. Can his marriage be restored?

There are two very special secondary characters in the story that for me were the highlight of the entire book. They each had very tough issues they were facing and through them we witness forgiveness, unconditional love and trusting God. I wanted to hug them both and tell them that they made a difference in many people’s lives. The author tackles some tough issues with grace and honesty. I loved how we witness what it is like to reach out to others in their darkest moments and show them they are accepted and loved.

I wonder what it would be like if we all did what Jesus called us to do? He wants us love, accept and support each other. We don’t need to point out sin, but instead show love to one another. Many of us have struggled with our faith and at times are ashamed to talk to God. There are days that I question why God allows things that hurt to happen. I cry over the people I have seen lose their battle with cancer and get angry. Then I read a book like this and know that God never gives us more than we can handle. He puts people in our lives for a reason and He always is there waiting for us to embrace Him. We are forgiven and can find unconditional love when we surrender all to Him.

I received a copy of this book from Celebrate Lit. The review is my own opinion.

Award-winning book that recently earned acclaim from the prestigious 2020 Next Generation Indie Book Awards!

Acadia Powers knows herself to be too selfish, too sinful, and too skeptical in her faith to marry a preacher. And yet she does. God truly does work in a mysterious way. Acadia nearly lost her faith at an early age due to what she saw as the hypocrisy of her parents’ generation. In college—where the novel begins—she meets and falls in love with Peter O’Neil, who is fervent in his faith and wants to share the good news with the world. Can she reach deep enough inside, or beyond herself, to find what she needs to keep on trying, or has she made too many mistakes already?

My Thoughts: This novel carries a powerful message. Being a pastor's wife is not easy. I know from experience. People have expectations and sometimes it's hard to live up to those expectations. This is a story of forgiveness, about a young woman learning who God is and about His love and forgiveness. This was a good read, and I know that readers' will enjoy the author's writing. The characters are down to earth and believable.

The first book I’ve read by this author was good. This book is actually the second book in a series but it can be read as a stand-alone. In this book, we meet Acadia and Peter. We first visit them in college and then later after they marry and are adults on their own.

Acadia is very self-centered. She has issues with God and whether he is real and can be trusted. Most of that stems from her childhood and her parent’s lives. Instead of facing that head-on she marries Peter and becomes a pastor’s wife.

While I think this is a well-written book it was not one that I would read again and again. It didn’t capture me like I had hoped it would. I found Acadia to be exactly what you’d hope a pastor’s wife is not. In my opinion, she should have talked with Peter and they should have worked through her issues before he became a pastor.

Book one in the series dealt with hard issues of marriage and second marriage with children. This book takes on the nitty-gritty of questioning faith and then growing in your faith. I think they are both good books but I definitely enjoyed the first book more.

I have voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book which I received through Celebrate Lit. All views expressed are only my honest opinion. I was not required to write a positive review nor was I compensated in any other way. All opinions expressed are my own. I am disclosing this in accordance with the FTC regulations.

What I think you should know:
Song of Sugar Sands by Debra Coleman Jeter is a recent historical Christian romantic fiction. It is the second book in the Sugar Sands series, however chronologically it is the first book in the series. It is set in the late 1970’s.

What you might need to know:
This book includes abuse, teen pregnancy, abortion and terminal illness. Acadia and Peter meet in college and are drawn to each other in spite of vastly differing spiritual beliefs.
While I understand that it is not the object of the story I feel like there should have been someone in Peter's life counseling him on the dangers of being unequally yoked especially as a future minister.

What I think about this book:
While I do not agree with the premise of the book, I am sure it happens and that many women do not feel worthy of being a pastor’s wife. Acadia was a hard character to like at first, but I really enjoyed watching her grow . It was difficult to read about Peter working to become the Pastor he wanted to be, but working to the husband that Acadia needed. I became very attached to many of the side characters in the book. This was an interesting read about finding a relationship with Christ, finding forgiveness and finding the ability to forgive yourself.

I received a complimentary copy of this book from Celebrate Lit, this in no way influenced my review. All opinions are my own.

I have to be honest, it took me a few chapters to really get into the storyline of
Song of Sugar Sands by Deborah Coleman Jeter, but once I did, I couldn't stop
reading it.

Acadia Powers meets Peter O'Neil at college. She is struggling with her faith
and he is a soon to be Preacher. Their relationship blossoms and they soon
marry. Acadia, who Peter lovingly calls, "Cadi", is in self doubt about being a
Preacher's wife. She doesn't feel she can live up to her obligations. She also feels
she has "too much" Sin her in past to be able to be a goods Pastor Wife. Peter is a
very encouraging and compassionate Husband and Pastor. He lovingly encourages
Cadi that he loves her despite her past. Will Acadia be able to overcome the past
and live in the present? Can she become strong in her faith and be the Pastor's
Wife she wants to be? Will their relationship survive the stress of doubt?

I am very glad that I didn't stop reading this book and gave it a chance. The
book really is about Christian Faith, Growing, Compassion, Forgiveness, and
finding the place you belong in life. The characters and the writing style are
very interesting and really make the book an easy read. FANTASTIC BOOK!

This is not the typical book I would read, and it's the first I've read by this author. I liked the book, but things were a little off in it. Also, I grew up in the exact time frame, and could never imagine myself in Acadia's shoes, nor having a friend like her. Instead of her being an adult, it actually felt like she was stuck more in middle school than college. Her relationship with Peter made her grow up some, but to be honest, I'd have expected a man who was thinking he'd be a preacher should have had a bit more of a clue that the "woman" he fell in love with had so many doubts about God and herself. Also, for her to have no clue about things happening in the church at Sugar Sands, like at the very end that there was something for the youth on the beach. Not only was she clueless, she was sooo selfish! The book is written in first person, from Acadia's point of view. Her thoughts, her feelings, showed she never looked too much further from herself. Finally, at the end, she's beginning to get a clue!

I received a complimentary copy of this book, was not required to leave a review, and the opinion expressed is my own.

Song of Sugar Sands, by Debra Jeter, introduces us to Peter O’Neil and Acadia Powers when they are young college students and continues through to their marriage and church ministry.

I struggled reading this book. Acadia, or Cadi as Peter called her, seemed to be more interested in stroking her ego by collecting boyfriends than in living the life she knew she should. I was glad that she seemed committed to Peter after they decided to marry, even if she wasn’t totally invested in being a preacher’s wife. Even though I didn’t enjoy the book as much as others I have read, there are many I am sure who will.

The last third or so of the book seemed to hit its momentum and became much more enjoyable to bury oneself in, though more tragic and sad, too.

I came to love one of the more minor characters, Beatrice. Her love for God, her loyalty for her church and her support for Cadi were truly moving.

Song of Sugar Sands is the second in a series. Having not read the first, I feel it works well as a standalone.

I received Song of Sugar Sands from Celebrate Lit. However, I was under no obligation to post a review.

This book took me on a roller-coaster of emotions!!!

This book was an engaging, graceful, romantic, realistic, refined, enlightening, intriguing, and warmhearted read!!!

This is the second book I’ve read from the talented writer, Debra Coleman Jeter. Earlier this year, I read, reviewed, and blogged about her book, “Joy After Noon,” which is Book One in The Sugar Sands Book Series and I absolutely loved it!! So, I was thrilled to get the chance to read her latest work, “Song of Sugar Sands,” which is Book Two in the same book series.

This book focuses on Acadia, "Cadi," a not-so religious college student who marries Peter, a soon to be preacher. They meet at a college party and instantly hit it off. Both are clear on their sides of religion and reasons why, but both are quickly falling for each other. Will Acadia be able to become a preacher’s wife? Does she have what it takes to help lead a congregation? There is so much more to this book and you will definitely want to check it out to find out what happens next!

I really enjoyed the main characters, Acadia and Peter. They were both very likable and genuine characters. I loved how opposite they were in so many ways, yet so alike in others. It really made them seem so raw, realistic, relatable, and well-developed. I enjoyed their witty back and forth banter and how passionately heated their conversations got and how much they believe in what they support and stand for and are willing to defend for those principles.

This book is so beautifully told in a mannerism that allows the reader to get fully immersed and invested in the story and the outcome of the characters.

I also really enjoyed the supporting characters. I seriously wanted to hug Beatrice and Sybil! I love that Debra Coleman Jeter, wrote characters that I was able to emotionally connect to, relate to, sympathize with, and want more than ever for their story to end happily ever after.

A strong character development journey to root for and enjoy watching it unfold!

I grew up in a strong Christian family-value home and we went to church every Sunday, Bible Study on Wednesdays, and as I got older, I even taught Sunday School. But, like most folks, when something really bad happens it is hard to keep your faith and when my mom was diagnosed with cancer for the second time – it just seemed impossible to continue to believe that this was meant to happen for a reason.

So, I was able to connect with Acadia about having a struggling relationship with God. It’s hard to see the big picture when you see someone you love, like Acadia’s friend, Beatrice, getting diagnosed with cancer. It's impossible to understand why this is all happening to them. Or, when Acadia’s student, Sybil, comes to her for help and tells her about her terrible home life. Acadia can’t fathom why God would put such good people through these kinds of pains and troubles?

I think many of us, have all had these doubts and questions at one point or another and will be able to easily connect with the characters and this book. It helps me knowing that others too, sometimes struggle, and aren’t always as firm in their beliefs as Peter is.

I also enjoyed the other main theme in this book, about the workings of a newlywed couple. Over the course of the book, you start to see Acadia and Peter’s relationship start slipping apart with him caught up with writing his sermons and leading his congregation, and her focused-on lesson plans and grading papers. It’s not hard to get caught up in everyday life and the romantic essence start to dwindle down. I enjoyed them noticing this and trying to find ways to bring the honeymoon back and not loose each other. It was interesting to see a newly married couple have their ups and downs and fight to keep their love, passion, commitment, and devotion to each other.

Additional strong themes that I enjoyed was the acceptance, forgiveness, and non-judgmental alliance which allows Acadia to open up about her religious upbringing struggles and lean on her husband and fellow congregants for support.

Again, I would like to point out that I really liked the character arc development as I felt both Acadia and Peter had quite a bit of growing and maturing to do at the beginning of the book. And, it was quite impressive to see their development and success together at the end.

This book has a creative story line with well executed plot points, fantastic writing style with detailed scenes, relatable characters, is evenly paced, and keeps you fully engaged and entertained.

This book contains strong Christian values and religious inspirational messages. This book includes Bible verses, Bible references, and prayers.

This book is book two of the Sugar Sands Book Series. It can be read as a standalone.

The author states that she wrote “Song of Sugar Sands,” first but released “Joy After Noon,” as the first book. However, “Song of Sugar Sands,” is set in the 1970's and “Joy After Noon,” is set in the 1980's. Therefore, “Song of Sugar Sands,” would technically and chronologically come first. Sounds a bit confusing, but after reading both books I didn’t get lost. There is character and story line overlap, but it didn’t appear backwards or that I had read them out of order even though they were released that way. So, in conclusion and in my opinion, both books can be read on their own and in any order.

All in all, I really enjoyed reading this book and would absolutely recommend it! I think all contemporary romance and romance readers will like this book, too – especially fans of inspirational fiction books! So, add it to your TBR List and get to reading - you won't be disappointed!

Song of Sugar Sands, by Debra Coleman Jeter, is book two in the Sugar Sands series. This is a stand alone story that takes place in the 1970's. Acadia and Peter met while in college. Both had their issues with their relationships with their parents. Right after getting married, Peter took a pastoral position in Sugar Sands. While Peter struggled with how to move forward with growing the church, Acadia struggled with needing more from Peter and had feeling of not being what is needed to be a pastor's wife.
This is a powerful story to read. The beginning of the story is made up of introducing character and filling in background. After that the story move along quickly. Written in first person, Acadia tells us their story. The story focuses on topics such as parent/teen relationship, alcoholism, teen pregnancy, abuse, and loss of a friend. The struggles Acadia goes through are so realistic and emotional.
I received a complimentary e-book copy of this book, this is my honest review.

I had the pleasure of reading and enoying the first installment from Debra Coleman Jeter’s Sugar Sands series, Joy After Noon. I was excited to have the opportunity to read the next book Song of Sugar Sands. I was not disappointed. I thought this was a great book. Even though it is part of a series, I believe this one can be read as a stand alone. I adored Acadia from the start. She was by far from perfect and a character that so many readers can relate and connect to. I enjoyed watching her grow throughout the story.

I am giving Songs of Sugar Sands four and a half stars. I recommend it for readers who enjoy clean romance. I am hoping there will be a third addition from the Sugar Sands series in the near future.

As I began reading this book, it took me a while to get into the storyline. For me at least, the beginning seemed to drag, but I am glad I kept reading. The author takes the reader on a journey from seeing a sinful soul to finding the truth about God’s mercy.

Containing a young lady who believes herself to be too sinful to receive God’s mercy, she winds up marrying a preacher. Perhaps because she teaches math, and I taught math at one point, I could relate to her.

She discovers that her preconceptions of what church members are like vastly differ from reality. Including domestic violence, an unplanned pregnancy, and more, the storyline eventually grabbed my attention and prevented me from putting this book down. So check it out for yourself.

I received a complimentary copy of this book, but this in no way influenced my review. All opinions are my own.

In this book, we meet a young couple in college, Peter and Acadia. I liked Peter from the start. He is a good man and has a lot of compassion for others and really is what a preacher should be (in my opinion). My problem was I didn't like Acadia at all. I know the author wrote her that way intentionally, but man it was tough.

Acadia doubted a lot, mostly due to her childhood. She was self-centered and I wish she would have just sat down and talked to Peter. He had a lot of patience with her and the author did a good job with writing this realistically. This truly is likely something that has happened and the struggles through the book are realistic.

It was a 3/5 for me.

Thank you to the author/publisher for the review copy of this book via Celebrate Lit. I received this book in exchange for an honest review and the opinions stated above are 100% mine.

This novel is a mixture of fiction and memoir genres. Although the story seems simple, it's also intriguing because we are thrust into the lives of people with complex backgrounds which have affected them. I love the honesty and the absence of pat answers or easy solutions. God's work is evident in the subtle and patient ways we often find off-putting. We want instant solutions in life and we want them in the plots we read. But it's not real life. I love the characters and the time setting. I'm becoming more and more impressed with the writing skills of Debra Jeter. This is the second book I've read authored by her and the other book was Book 1 in this series. I look forward and hope there is a Book 3.

I couldn’t put this book down!

From beginning to end, I loved the twists and turns, the inner conflictions, and the growth that was displayed from Acadia. I never knew a preachers wife could endure so much internal struggles. And I loved how Peter and Acadias love was depicted throughout the book. I couldn’t put the book down it was so well written. It’s been a while since I’ve picked up a romance novel. This was more of a romance combined with reality novel for me which led me to love it even more. I recommend this book for anyone who enjoys reading about spiritual growth along with overcoming life’s tribulations.

I loved the premise of this story and the chance to get to know both Acadia and Peter as their relationship blossoms! I appreciated the honesty in which the characters are written, Acadia with her struggles to believe in God. I loved how their relationship develops and how it retained it's beautiful through the ups and downs of life. The characters are well written and I appreciated that there are some wonderful secondary characters as well. I highly recommend this one! It can be read as a stand alone or with the other book in the series.

I really enjoyed this book. This is the second book of the series, but can be enjoyed as a stand alone. The characters are real and they pulled on my heart string. This novel deals with doubts and questions about why God allows bad things to happen. It also deals with acceptance, forgiveness, alcholism and physical abuse.

I especially like that this book contains strong Christian values and religious inspirational messages and Bible verses, Bible references, and prayers as part of the story.

I recommend both books of this series to readers who like Inspirational Christian Fiction.

Compelling, complex, purposeful, extraordinarily and deeply touching. This novel is very well written with profound depth and breadth. The characters so believable and the emotions palpable – a story that gathers the reader in and compels you to complete it. Memorable in so many ways, and definitely not soon to be forgotten. How do some people live with deep and abiding faith in God while others struggle in so many ways? Questions to be pondered and prayed over. I highly recommend this novel, for you and to gift.

A Beautiful Story of Forgiveness

I love this story. My close friend is a pastor’s wife, but her faith had always been strong and certain since I knew her.

But Cadi’s faith in God and in herself was troubled. The only thing she knew through this whole tale was that she loves Peter and wanted what was best for him. Peter’s idealism, his goodness endeared him to me. Cadi’s doubts, her fears, and uncertainties made her very real. The author told a story about forgiveness without being preachy.

I would recommend this to readers looking for an unforgettable love story.

Part of a series but can absolutely be read as a standalone.

Acadia was a very lovely and relatable character. The story was real and shows how backgrounds influences the people we become.

The bends and curves of the story is thrilling and so captivating. The author did a good job in relaying the lives of people and the struggles they go through and how God helps.

The characters real and relatable.

I recommend this book to those who love a good and deep story.

Heartfelt Relatable Characters

What a wonderful story! We can all relate to loss in our lives and stepping into big shoes. The author connects to a myriad of emotions. The family secrets and struggles involve the reader in a suspenseful tale. We all cheer them on to find the peace and love they’re searching for.

Song of Sugar Sands is book 2 in the Sugar Sands series. I have read book 1 and you can see my review: HERE. However, they can be read as a stand a lone. One of the things that I really like about this author is how she creates real, raw characters. In this story we meet Acadia. She does not think she is good enough to marry a preacher. She does not feel that she is worthy enough. How many of us women don't think we are good enough? Even though Jesus came to forgive us for our past present and future sins - women especially struggle with this. (I know that I do sometimes) But Arcadia does struggle with this. She also struggles with her faith. She believes in God - but does not understand how Peter wants to devote his life to serving HIM. We also meet Peter, who will be a preacher soon. Peter is such a likeable character also. He has such a deep faith in God. Peter and Arcadia meet at a college party and they hit it off immediately. It was fun to watch this young relationship grow into a young marriage. This book will tug at your heartstrings - it shows you how important it is to be completely honest with your spouse. Arcadia has not shared 100% of her past with her husband. This book shows the struggles that goes along with this. Is Arcadia strong enough to support Peter when there is push back from his new Congregation? I enjoyed reading their story.
This book has well written characters, a original story line (that will tug at your heart strings), and will keep you engaged from the first chapter. I really enjoy how this author writes and look forward to what she produces next.
I received a copy of this book through the Celebrate Lit blogging program - all thoughts are my own.

It's so hard to date someone whose faith is so different from your own. Peter is deeply devoted to his faith, aspiring to become a pastor as soon as he can. Cadi has some faith but has found herself slipping away from it over the years and simply cannot comprehend how Peter can feel the way that he does. She is so lost in general, that I felt like she just kind of gave in to marrying Peter because she knew he was sincere in his feelings for her and would provide for her. I know that she says that she is in love with him, but it feels more like she is in love with an idea of him instead of him for who he really is.

As you're reading the book, it definitely has a slow burn and a detachment that reflects how Cadi is feeling in her life as she is telling her story. She wants to do right by her students, as a preacher's wife, and in her marriage, but isn't sure which direction to turn. And because she is struggling with her faith, the last place she feels like turning is to God. She really wants Peter to see her, acknowledge her, but he is so wrapped up in his new church, which is having difficulty growing and moving into more modern times (in this book, the late 1970s/early 1980s). Keep in mind the time period as you read this book and some situations play out.

I think this book is going to speak to people who have struggled with their faith over the years, because they will recognize their own struggles in Cadi's story, even if they handled it differently.

Thank you to the author and Goddess Fish for providing me an Advanced Review Copy. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

This is a very sweet look into the life of a young married couple… Peter and Acadia. In addition to all the other issues that all young marrieds face, Acadia has added issues from her past that she has not only not dealt with, but that she’s never shared with her husband. It was a quick read that I didn’t want to put down – I was that invested in their lives.

This is a Christian novel and so, of course deals with spiritual matters, but it does so in a way that didn’t, in this reviewer’s eye, come across as “preachy.” Both of the main characters are likable, although they also both have some growing up to do. They have to learn to pay more attention to what their partner is going through, which I find to be so very realistic.

The secondary characters, as well, are fully developed…even the characters that I had issues with showed that they are not all bad. Good job.

This is the first book that I’ve read by this author, and I’m looking forward to reading more.

After reading the blurb to this book, I wanted to read and review it.

I thought the main female character would be a little on the broody side. Even though the main male character is a preacher/priest, he definitely has his doubts. This, to me, made Peter more real and possibly even relatable.

What stopped me from a rating of five was the historical event that was referenced. The date of the event was slightly off.

This story took a bit for me to get into. A little preachy, a little drawn out. But as Acadia and Peter found their way together, married, and continued on the bumpy road that is life, I became attached to the characters along the way. As the ending came nearer, there were more tears and a deeper understanding of their relationship. It was a worthy read in the end.

I received a copy of this story through Goddess Fish Promotions, and this is my unsolicited review.
