This book provides a comprehensive look at the practice and history of both circumcision and foreskin restoration. It covers numerous topics including the anatomy and function of the foreskin, the history of circumcision (both religious and secular), the effects of circumcision both (physical and psychological), and finally foreskin restoration (including various methods men can use to restore their foreskin).
I wrote to Jim Bigelow in the 1980s when he was asking for men who felt harmed by circumcision to use in his upcoming book about foreskin restoration. Of cource this was back when there was not social media so putting out a call for men who were harmed by the practice would not go global. I was lucky, I guess, because I purchaced the book when it came out and happen to see my letter responce in the book. Of cource anonymity was import to me back then, to say yo actually noticed half of your penis was missing and you were traumatized by it would have meant something was wrong with you! YES, and something was wrong with them too, they just did not have the ...mindset or intelligence to realize it! I grew up in a neighborhood where all the boy were intact, normal, uncircumcised! The men in America have been duped into seeing reality as fiction, or as abnormal being normal. Not me, I knew what was done to me and the loss I suffered because of it. I am more vocal today! Jim was a pioneer and I am greatful to him! However, I can never regain what was, denied, stolen, ripped off or ...CUT OFF me! It remains a sad reality the barbaric practices that go on in the world in the name of profit! Thank God for the boys I saved from THE KNIFE! Thank you Jim!..Ray
why I think genital integrity is a human rights issue ... I am not crazy (or even a democrat), but, I think this is an important book for anyone with a penis, or anyone who might love someone with a penis especially liked the cultural / religious discussions in the book and the historical frames of reference
While this book felt a little outdated at times--it is twenty years old--the technical parts on foreskin restoration still seemed very valuable. The other material, on history and psychology, I was a little less convinced by the value of, and I'm not sure they really needed to be there. That said, it's still an important book for those of us who are unhappy with having mutilated genitals.
