Surprisingly well-written book by one of Manson's friends....contains a lot of direct conversations the author had with Manson, which are the most fascinating part of the book. Sometimes Manson would do his typical circular "Charlie jive", but other times he actually spoke....sensibly. He was certainly conning the author, because the author seems to admire him while absolving him of any guilt whatsoever, which is ridiculous. The underlying theme of this book is how insidious and convincing Charlie the Con Man's schticks were. He 100% convinced the author that he was just a little misunderstood victim/hero who just wanted to frolic in the desert with his guitar and girls. The author actually unintentionally revealed just as much about HIMSELF as he did about Manson.
The author explains the events of the summer of 1969 in a way that makes you stop and think. Was Charlie Manson a murderer. Yes. But not of the murders he was found guilty of? Maybe. This is a great book, I did have trouble following the footnotes on the Kindle version but in print would have been fine.
