A comprehensive study of Northern Ireland's most prominent playwright Belfast's Brian Friel. Discusses the creative tension between the claims of story and history, the demands of the individual and those of the ''tribe'' Catholic and Protestant. Particular attention is paid to the political and artistic context provided by the Field Day Theatre Company in the 1980s and the influence their critical and dramatic strategies exerted on the writers development.
