Leave It!: How to teach Amazing Impulse Control to your Brilliant Family Dog

Rate this book
You've got your new dog, you've got the bowl, the collar and the lead. Now what? This puppy doesn't seem to understand anything you say! You got your pet to be your companion - and yet all you seem to do is yell at her! Let's change this right instead of focussing on what you don't want your dog to do, focus on what you do want. Instead of having unnecessary battles over trivia, build up terrific games your dog longs to play with you. Soon your unruly dog will be saying, "Yes? What would you like me to do for you?" And so begins a wonderful partnership. Beverley takes you by the hand and leads you through the games and lessons, step-by-step. There's no strange jargon, no "Thou shalt not's", and every time you get stuck, another solution pops up. Through years of experience teaching new owners how to work with their puppies and dogs - entirely without force - Beverley knows just what you're up against. The second book in the series Essential Skills for your Brilliant Family Dog continues the fun of training your family pet without force or intimidation. This book shows you how to teach your dog impulse control, so that he can earn great freedom in your home by being trustworthy around food, doorways, the children's toys, your best shoes ... and anything else a puppy may take a fancy to!

I've had to park this one for a while. I'm obviously not doing the exercieses right as the dog is getting a bit weirded out.

Definitely better than the first book in the series. The author goes into a bit more detail here, and I greatly appreciate the mention of classical conditioning and operant condition to give the reader an idea of why these exercises will eventually work. She also touches a little bit more on how to effectively use treats, which was greatly lacking in the first book. Still not as super informative as it could be, but definitely straight forward for the common dog owner looking to improve their life with their dog.

A better behaved companion!

A great book about impulse control and how to teach even the most energetic pups into ones you can trust.

🖊 I was curious enough to pick up a copy, and it was worth the little time it took for me to read it. The author states that “Good treats [to give your dog are] Cheese, Sausage, Ham, Chicken, Frankfurter, Salami, Homemade sardine, tuna, or ham cookies, Freeze-dried 100% meat treats, Dehydrated liver, heart, lung, etc” While these may be just what Fido and Fluffy want, I would not feed most of these processed foods to them because of the high salt content and fat content.
