About the author

Englishman Steven Moore grew up by the seaside, thus his first true joy was the great outdoors. His innate love of travel and a degree in anthropology, archaeology, and art history help inform his fiction writing. Steven also loves painting, photography, and both playing and watching sport.

The travel bug bit the now perpetual nomad early, and to date Steven has lived and worked on five continents, and visited almost sixty countries. Compassionate, brave, sensitive and intelligent, Hiram Kane is that and more. Feathered Serpent is a masterful effort, operating both at a slow burn and with a ratcheting intensity that comes to a stunning climax. With a taut plot and unpredictable twists…Arqueology and thrill is blended with vivid characters in circumstances that become more threat-filled by the hour. This book has a thrilling plot, history and myth of Mexico magnificently blended with heart-pounding scenes filled with blood and guts. Intense moments and thrilling scenarios feel the story with trepidation. The landscape, the culture is described lovingly, enhancing the beauty of its people and customs, the colours so vivid it made me feel I was really there. The storyline lends to a closer examination of the emotional and moral ethics stakes in life choices. I could see Moore’s way of thinking perfectly reflected here. A profound insight in sociology and behavioral aspects of humanity. Another thought provoking book in an excellent series!

I think I have found a new favorite action series!

Hiram Kane. Archaeologist. Explorer. Hero. In The Feathered Serpent, Kane is up against a deranged and discredited professor obsessed with fame and revenge. Calling himself Quetzel, the madman kidnaps 12 young girls in Mexico, threatening to sacrifice them all unless Kane meets his demands. The author obviously did in-depth research on Mexico, the Aztecs, and related archaeological finds. Richly developed background, heroic characters, and an exciting story-line make this an awesome action story! The book definitely kept my attention from start to finish.

The Feathered Serpent is the 5th book in the Hiram Kane series. This is the first book by Steven Moore that I've read. I'm definitely going to back-track and start with book 1 of the Hiram Kane series, The Tiger Temple, and read the entire series. Loved it!

Just a warning: The story line does include some rough, dark topics including child abduction, human sacrifice, violence, etc. The descriptions are never overly graphic, but the violent scenes are intrinsic to the plot. So, if those types of situations aren't ones you can handle....might be best to pass by this series.

This book starts with the main story being about Hiram finding his long-lost brother, and a side story about a disgraced archaeologist coming up with a plan to get back at those who hurt him.

Hiram lost his younger brother years ago when he was 10 and his brother was 8, and now he receives a letter from a person claiming to be his now-adult brother who lives in Mexico. Hiram decides to go down to Mexico to meet his brother Danny and to finally get some closure as to what happened to his younger brother.

To be honest, this arc was probably my least favorite part of the story. I was expecting Danny to have been kidnapped, but he wasn't. He chose to leave the family of his own free will at 8 years old and then chose to never go back. This was just astonishing to me. How do you decide at 8 years old that you are going to be ok living on your own? The book doesn't really explain if Hiram's parents were ever abusive towards Danny, it was just a few misheard conversations. I know we have all had times where we overheard something or misinterpreted something and thought that our parents or siblings didn't love us anymore. We've also had times where we decided to "run away." But for an 8-year-old to run away and then just STAY away for years and years, without even trying to contact his or her parents when they weren't even abusive? That's definitely not normal behavior at all. I hope that this behavior is actually discussed in future installments of the Hiram Kane series.

Besides this rather strange arc, I enjoyed the rest of this thriller! The former professor had such an interesting backstory, and I almost thought that I could forgive him for his crimes before he had started killing the girls. Honestly, he was disgraced in such a stupid way. I couldn't blame him for being upset. But then he just got crazier and crazier as the story got on, and I saw more and more of the professor slipping away as he started to believe the facade that he had created for himself. By the end, I realized that the professor was completely gone, and only a madman was left. All I wonder is what happened to Rafe? Is he going to pop up in another book? So many questions that I am going to need answers for.

Once the action in this story starts, it REALLY starts. I was actually a bit shocked by the sheer gore in this story, I definitely cringed during some parts. If you don't like gore, this is definitely not the book for you. I have read a few of the Hiram Kane stories, and this one definitely ranks pretty high on the gore. For me, I actually liked the fact that the story didn't shy away from gore. It really added to the intensity of the action scenes and made me really feel as if the girl's lives were really on the line. Unlike many other stories that pretend to kill people and then reveal to the reader that it was really all fake. This book almost had me crying at times, it was just that good.

I would recommend this book to anyone looking for a new adult thriller-mystery novel to read.

Steven Moore's The Feathered Serpent: A Hiram Kane Adventure (The Hiram Kane Adventure Series Book 5) is a genuine thriller. Hiram has always felt guilt regarding is brother, lost when they were just boys. He receives an anonymous letter leading him to central Mexico suggesting that his brother, lost for 30 years, is there and needs him.

He hears a news report there that 12 young girls have been kidnapped. He receives a call from a man calling himself Quetzal demanding that he obtain and bring him an unnamed ransom or he will ritually sacrifice each of the girls aged 6 to 14. What he does not know is that the mad man responsible is a former archeologist who had always idolized Hiram. Before Hiram is told what the ransom is, Quetzal ritually kills the first girl and promises to kill each of the others each hour until his demand is satisfied.

Hiram has to figure out where Quetzal is holding the girls, obtain the ransom and then stop the sacrifices. To help him, he has his girlfriend Alex, two older expat ladies, a local bartender and one other. Seems virtually impossible! Moore spins a terrific story with much of the action taking place within a nearby Aztec pyramid. Lots of archeological background and horrific history. everything we've come to love in the series.

If you've followed the Hiram Kane adventures so far, you know Kane is a hero with a rich history. Throughout these novels we learn more and more about his past, his family, and those he loves. In the Feathered Serpent he reunites with his long lost brother, and together, along with his intrepid girlfriend Alex Ridley and a cast of interesting supporting characters, they solve the mystery of a mass abduction of young girls in a historic Mexican town. Along the way, like with all of Steven Moore's novels, we learn some of the rich history and culture behind the story. It's this backdrop and these subplots that flesh each Hiram Kane adventure into a modern Indiana Jones style, swashbuckling adventure. In this case the setting is among the ruins of great ancient civilizations of central Mexico, where the quest for scientific glory has poisoned the mind of a noted archaeologist into heinous acts in order to take his place in infamy. Can Hiram and friends solve his riddles and save the lives of the innocent victims? You already know the answer to that, but its a fun ride getting there.

Archeological thrillers are one of my favorite genres, and Steven Moore's Hiram Kane stories are awesome. When you combine a pit an adventurer against an Aztec God (a wanna be god anyway) it makes for nonstop action. If you have to read any of the Hiram Kane stories, what are you waiting for, grab The Feathered Serpent and I'll guarantee you, you will be looking at the first four books in this series. This book has a somewhat different and very personal twist to it. Hiram has returned to his family home in England, to recover from the trials and tribulations of his and Alex’s trip to Tibet in the previous book. It was supposed to have been a trip to commemorate the life of his best friend, Evan and to achieve something that had always been on Evan’s bucket list. It turned out a lot differently than expected when they encountered drug and people smugglers. They both need to recover from wounds that were physical and mental. Alex stayed in India, whilst he had returned to his family. But Alex has something she has kept secret from Hiram, regarding those events. What that is, may not be revealed even though she and Hiram are closer than ever.

Whilst holed up at his family home, his parents receive an anonymous letter from Mexico, with some surprising and shocking news. It brings up matters from the past, which still weigh on the whole family to the present day, but especially for Hiram Kane. The details given in the letter may also bring a little bit of hope for a long ago, unsolved and traumatic event. Hiram and Alex make their way to Mexico in the hope of solving this old wound.

Yet again, Hiram and Alex get caught up the mad rumblings of a psychopath. A disgraced archaeology professor has been planning a huge event to get back at those who betrayed him and ruined his life. They took his discovery away from him and left him ridiculed by his peers. He is about to unleash his wrath against innocents, right after the locals of the town celebrated a major festival. Add in a local pyramid with a hidden world beneath it and someone who is losing his humanity and sanity in pursuit of revenge. A right mix of old Aztec traditions and the troubles of the modern world.

The disgraced professor has gotten other petty criminals to abduct young, innocent victims, twelve in total, and he has planned to murder them in a brutal manner. He believes himself to be the persona of an old Aztec god and will sacrifice them on the altar stones used in the past for such ritual sacrifice. All to make his previous colleagues and the university admit his role in an important discovery he made. Hearing that Hiram Kane, one of his idols in the archaeology world, is in the town, makes the professor alter his plans accordingly. He forces Hiram to make the ultimate decision, will he sacrifice his life for Alex’s, the love of his life, and to hopefully save any of the remaining innocent young victims.

A monumental life and death decision, especially on top of the guilt he feels over the deaths of others, on each of his previous expeditions and journeys around the world. Has he recovered enough from his previous injuries and scars? More personal issues make the current events harder to cope with, but he and Alex get some assistance from others. This could be his hardest case yet.

Another exciting adventure with Hiram Kane and his fiancée Alex. This one has been the hardest one they both have had to deal with, with both mental and physical injuries to deal with and the reluctance of being named and drawn into yet another impossible event. Lives are in danger and Hiram and Alex can’t refuse to help, this is the type of people they are. You get to love these main characters, the stories and events are believable and set in such diverse locations, all beautifully described by an author that has been to them all.

I have read each of the books by this author and this is the fifth book in the Hiram Kane series. They have certainly all been great adventures so far! This book is definitely the most dangerous one for Hiram and Alex, but also solves an old mystery, which makes life so much more precious for all. Until now, I would have said my favourite book of the author’s was The Samurai Code, due to my love of Japan, martial arts and samurai culture. My favourite is now The Feathered Serpent due to its complex storyline. Solving an old matter, bringing others into danger, with yet another unexpected adventure and dangerous mission, but with death and personal sacrifice at its centre.

I received an ARC copy of this book from the author, but went ahead and bought the kindle version as well, so I will always have an updated version. I would recommend it to all who love travel, a sense of adventure, archaeological facts and discoveries, a good thriller and just a good read! I have freely given my own opinion of the book above.

Hiram Kane at his very best….

This is hands down the best Hiram Kane to date. I have read and love all previous four books in the series, some were good, and some were better, but “The Feathered Serpent” surpass them all.
Not only is a real thriller, but it also provides a lot of insight in Hiram Kane’s personal struggles.

After receiving an anonymous letter regarding the hereabouts of Hiram long lost (and presumed death) brother, Hiram and Alex travel to Mexico to unravel the secret of his brother disappearance three decades ago. Once there Hiram not only success in solving this mystery… no spoilers here, but just let us say that no reader will be disappointed…. It is a well constructed plot that allows for a more in deep insight in Hiram’s character and personality; but also helps to save 10 kidnapped girls, but confronting the most heinous and diabolic adversary, a foe that targets Hiram out of chance, due just to his presence at the wrong time in the wrong place.

The plot is fast paced and not for the faint of heart, it is much gruesome and dark adventure than the previous ones, but nonetheless necessary to explore Hiram’s character traits as well as the nuances of his relationship with his girlfriend Alex.

There is only one minor regret… the book could have profited from a couple of more chapters to better explore the foe’s reasons and to allow a slower pace at the end…. on the other hand… we just love Hiram and his “deus ex-machina” solutions, don’t we….

I just cannot wait for the next Hiram Kane adventure!!!!

Steven Moore's The Feathered Serpent: A Hiram Kane Adventure, Book 5 is a real page-turning, fast action thriller. Moore spins a terrific story with well developed characters and world building.  The action draws one into the story where the antagonist is a monster created by society's disregard for a person's feelings and how a person's character could be twisted by bullying and could impact that person and their their impact on the world.


Hiram Kane is an archaeologists turned explorer is constantly find himself in deathly activities.   Hiram has arrived in San Miguel de Allende in Central Mexico hoping to find the brother he thought has been dead fo 30 years.  He quickly finds himself involved in finding twelve young girls who went missing after a festival.  He has to move fast before the madman who took the girls murders them via a sacrifice.

While I found some repetition of events distracting, I still couldn't put it down and was kept up way past my bedtime.

I did receive an ARC, but this review to totally my own. Looking forward to the next in the series.

The Feathered Serpent (5th book in series) takes Hiram Kane to Central America. Hiram receives a letter that his lost brother of 30 years needs his help. Off he goes.....

Hiram Kane is an archaeologist turned adventurer. Besides trying to locate his long lost brother, Hiram has to save 12 young girls from a madman who plans on killing them. ( obviously more to this story... but no spoilers)

One of the big things that I like about the Hiram Kane series is the amount of research that Steven Moore adds into the story. The Feathered Serpent is centered around an Aztec Pyramid. What isn't to like about action and learning something at the same time?

Archaeological thrillers have become on of my favorite genre. The Feathered Serpent is non-stop action from the very beginning.

This is arguably the best book in this series so far. It’s longer than books 1 and 2, which allows for more setup and world-building. Unlike books 3 and 5, the setup doesn’t crawl along at a snail’s pace. It’s exciting and intense. The characters are in real, believable danger. There’s finally some character development. It’s everything the other books weren’t.

The narrator as always does an incredible job with narrating and accents. I’ll bring this up again because it’s no less annoying; I can’t stand how he does different accents for Hiram Kane’s internal Voice and his speaking voice. If he can do the accent, then he should do it for both so it’s less jarring when Hiram Kane speaks in a different accent than you hear for most of the novel.

Received as an audio review copy from Story Origin, this is an honest review. The hauntingly grotesque exotic thriller is beautifully narrated by Kenneth Bryant, whose impeccable vocal style elevates the race against time Hiram Kane and this friends find themselves embroiled in Mexico. His performance of the mentally disturbed former professor Humberto Palomares, whom daringly casts himself as Quetzel aka Quetzalcoatl- a powerful god in Mesoamerica; is absolutely engaging and bone chilling by the man's twisted exploits to regain his tarnished reputation by forcing the group to rescue innocent girls trapped an ancient pyramid and to be sacrifices to fulfill his deepest desires. This story will keep on edge as the dark reasoning behind why Humberto Palomares is so determined to slaughter not only children but their valiant rescuers as well. Steven Moore definitely knows how to deliver powerfully dark and poignant twists, highly recommended.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book and will continue with the series. It has all of the elements of a great thriller with an evil villain, flawed hero, historical context, and a great setting. The characters are well written and well voiced by the narrator. The story takes place in Mexico, and my only complaint was the author's translation of almost every Spanish sentence into English, even very simple ones. For the most part, he only used phrases that are well known by English speakers or easily discernible through context, so the constant translation pulled me out of the story. I understand that those unfamiliar with the language may have the opposite opinion, but I found it jarring. Again, that's just me. Overall, I recommend the book and although I haven't yet read the rest of the series (yet), I am going to go out on a limb and recommend them as well.

I have been a fan of Steven since i first read the samurai code a couple of years ago. This is book 5 and I personally think it is the beat one to date.
This book involves hiram travelling to mexico to meet a long thought dead relative, and ends up with him being caught up in a dangerous adventure involving a man who has kidnapped some young children and is threatening to kill them.

Hiram then has to spend the reat of the book trying to save the children with his new team.

The action starts. the beginning and doesn't let up until the very last page and, as I know how Steve works, I really wasn't sure who would survive the adventure.

Overall a brilliant book, which i would suggest everyone buy.

Another cracking Hiram Kane adventure

If you haven't yet been fortunate enough to find yourself involved with Hiram's adventures then may I recommend doing just that.
Having received a letter from Mexico hinting his long lost brother is alive Hiram Kane and his fiancee Alex Ridley head off to verify this and find themselves smack in the middle of a madman's quest for revenge and infamy. When 12 innocent young girls are taken from a small Mexican town Hiram and co. face a race against time to stop a crazed ex archaeology professor from sacrificing the girls to ensure the world takes note!
Well written, well paced and well done by Steven Moore.

Danny is a likeable guy. He has a few good friends, a favorite bar and a lot of guilt he keeps inside. His friend, Kenny senses something wrong and does his best to figure it out. Once Kenny figures it out with help from a few of Danny's other friends, things begin to look better. There are several other good characters in here including Hiram Kane and his fiance, Alex. There also has to be a bad guy. This one calls himself Quetzal and is pretty much insane. That's where things start going bad and the action really picks up. The characters are well written and the plot is really good. Altogether, it makes for a great book!

Damn fine writing. The author expertly builds up the suspense and weaves in action to keep the reader on the edge, waiting for what the next page reveals. This is a thriller but it also explores human nature. The author takes us on an emotional rollercoaster as the characters go through the story. The motivations of each character is explored giving them depth and making them almost leap off the page. The story is set in a beautiful, peaceful town contrasting the evil lurking below. The details of the surroundings enhance the overall story line rather than detracting from it. It is an amazing book and I highly recommend it.

Hiram Kane - a lost brother found, 12 girls lost unfound.

Hiram Kane received an unexpected letter revealing that his brother Danny, thought dead for many years was alive in a small town in Mexico. Hiram travelled to reunite with his younger brother, to find more adventure waiting in the form of a madman! 12 girls missing, one crazed lunatic announcing his nefarious plan to prove his worth. Only mayhem and death could ensue and Hiram and friends must pick up the pieces.

Great characters, a devious plot and a practiced storyteller have made this chapter in the life of a renowned archaeology professor a great read!

Wow! was my first impression when I read this book. I really wish I had found this author before now. Very descriptive passages and great characters. Hiram Kane, an archeologist, receives a letter that his long-lost brother can be found in Mexico. He also gets a call from a madman who calls himself Quetzal, telling him to bring a ransom or he will start sacrificing 12 young girls that he has kidnapped.

Lots of action and suspense. Also a fair bit of death and madness. This is a must-read. I plan to read all of the Hiram Kane thrillers.

Starts by giving you a nice warm fuzzy feeling, kicks you in the teeth and then starts ramping up to an electifying climax.
Just my kind of book. The detail makes it really easy to picture the locations. The characters are well fleshed out and, for the most part, likeable. Gave me a couple of late nights.
Extremely well written and laid out for the reader.
This is only my second Hiram Kane book but there will be more, sooner rather than later.

Im glad I was it is an excellent read with so many twists and turns, you just cant stop turning the pages until there are no more to turn. I would totally recommend this and I will be reading the ones in the series I haven't read yet.

Another great action adventure read from Steven Moore! Love the characters, especially Kane who has all the attributes of a decent human being as opposed to the evil unhinged Quetzal. The scenery descriptions are vivid but without being boring and made me add a visit to this charming Mexican city to my bucket list. Can highly recommend this book and indeed the entire series! This is my first Hiram book and it kept me hooked from the moment I started it. I didn’t want to put it down the pace was really good and I enjoyed the characters. The author clearly did their research which made this story even better. I can’t wait to get all the other books in this series. It was really good and held my attention the entire way. Good action though there were a few parts that felt a little repetitive but overall it was a really good story.

Steven Moore incredibly has done it again! I'm exhausted trying to keep up with our heroes. A great fast moving adventure with psychological flawed characters run the cause of action. It seems like Hiram Kane is a magnet for weirdos trying to kill him and Alex
Good to put the mystery of the vanished brother to rest. One less thing for the hero to feel guilty about.

The Feathered Serpent by Steven Moore is full of vivid imagery, a missing brother, and adventure. The story moves non-stop. I really enjoyed the Aztec references in the story and thought they added another original layer and dimension to the character of Hiram Kane. Finding out about his missing brother was a plus. Kenneth Bryant was great performing this book. He gave the characters distinguishable voices. I requested this review copy audiobook and have voluntarily written this review.

This was a great way to either close the series, or give it a chance to spin off in a new direction. Plenty of save the day action, and enough suspense to keep you glued to the book until the end. Luckily it isn't one of the lengthier Kane adventures, because I didn't want to stop before the end. An excellent original story. I received a free review copy of this audio book in exchange for an honest review.

The good, the bad and the really, really bad happens.

Hiram and Alex are back in England, when a letter arrived addressed to Hiram telling him his brother is alive. Hiram and Alex are in a small town in Mexico getting ready to walk in a small bar they had never been to before. Some crazy calls Hiram out by killing two young girls, which then makes everyone 's world go crazy.

Good book. Read and enjoy!!

Even if this is your first Hiram Kane Adventure, it is a brilliantly written, utmost thrilling ride.
But if you, like me, have read the previous novels about Kane, the brave and adventurous expedition leader, it gives you even more :
It tugges at your heartstrings.
It frightens you to pieces.
It makes you sigh in despair on one page, and then makes you jump for joy on the next.

Perfect.
Absolutely perfect.
