Para hacerlo investiga a Paul Wilkes, factótum de esta particular empresa, desde su nacimiento en plena Segunda Guerra Mundial, su juventud en los años sesenta hasta su incierto presente: una vida teñida por fascinantes teorías conspirativas.

Restos de un diario íntimo, excéntricas divagaciones, testimonios de exmiembros (“Fue un ciclo”, declaró la artista Jenny Holzer sobre su participación activa en Leyden Ltd.), fotografías nunca antes compartidas y exclusivas revelaciones (“La letra jota no figura en la tabla periódica”) hacen de Leyden Ltd. un libro tan inclasificable como extraordinario.

About the author

Luis Sagasti, a writer, lecturer and art critic, was born in Bahía Blanca, Argentina in 1963. He graduated in History at the Universidad Nacional del Sur where he now teaches. From 1995 to 2003 he was Curator in charge of Education and Cultural Outreach at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Bahía Blanca, authoring numerous art catalogues for exhibitions. Including Fireflies (known in Spanish as Bellas Artes, 2011), he has published four novels: El Canon de Leipzig (Leipzig's Canon, 1999), Los mares de la Luna (Seas of the Moon, 2006), and Maelstrom (2015). He also has a book of essays Perdidos en el espacio (Lost in Space, 2011). His new novel, Una ofrenda musical (A Musical Offering) came out in early 2017.

February 10, 2025 Update Author Luis Sagasti updated me that his Lenguas vivas [Living Languages] (2023) is now expected to be translated into English with the provisional title "Lighthouses." Still, I might take a stab at my own translation. 🤔.

January 31, 2023 Update I heard from author Luis Sagasti on Facebook that his next book will be published in March 2023 by Eterna Cadencia and one of the subjects of the book will be Hildegard of Bingen. Hopefully I don't have to translate this one myself this time 😅.

I very much enjoyed Luis Sagasti's mixed fiction/non-fiction style in the recent excellent English language translations by Fionn Petch in A Musical Offering (2017/2020) and Fireflies (2011/2018). I was so taken with them that I searched out Sagasti's other, still untranslated works. This led me to his most recent published work, Leyden Ltd. (2019), which seemed paradoxically to be quite readable / translatable for a non-Spanish reader as myself.

Leyden Ltd. is not a book in the conventional sense. It consists of 550 footnotes spread over 6 chapters. The actual body of the supposed book is missing and you therefore have to imagine its contents based only on the footnotes. There is an Index provided which gives a clue that the complete book would have consisted of at least 487 pages, based on its highest-numbered page reference. The extant published work of footnotes is a novella-length 117 pages in its Kindle eBook edition.

The reason I describe this as "readable", is that most of those footnotes are one-sentence statements that usually relate to the various artistic, musical, historical, geographical etc. themes that are characteristic of Sagasti. A few of them relate to more obscure avant-garde composers e.g. Stockhausen, but most are from easily identifiable culture/pop-culture e.g. The Beatles, Led Zeppelin, Stanley Kubrick, Francis Ford Coppola, Emily Dickinson, etc. Some of the footnotes consist solely of photographic images.

So what is Leyden Ltd.? It is a secret organization, a sort of artistic Bilderburg Group or Illuminati. Its supposed leader (described as its general co-ordinator) is Paul Wilkes, whose excerpted diary entries make for a dozen or so of the footnotes. There are some fictional members named Matheson, Robinson and Pryce who are frequently mentioned. The fictional Robinson is described as being a photographer for the real-life graphic design firm Hipgnosis, famous for their record album covers for Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin and others. Supposed members drawn from real-life include artists Banksy & Jenny Holzer and members of Monty Python.

Writers Thomas Pynchon and Carlos Castaneda have concealed their identities to the best of their ability. The street artist Banksy is the most recent example. To claim that the latter belongs or belonged to Leyden Ltd. is, to say the least, risky. - Footnote 1 from Chapter 1 of Leyden Ltd.

The ironic tone with which Eric Idle and Michael Palin of Monty Python denied that they belonged to Leyden Ltd. in the 1970s is very eloquent. - Footnote 14 from Chapter 6 of Leyden Ltd.

There is also a very early hint that absolutely everyone could be a member of Leyden Ltd:

Masha Alyokhina: “We are always meeting people who are Pussy Riot. It is the best. There is no membership form. Just put on a ski mask and start protesting." - Footnote 4 from Chapter 1 of Leyden Ltd.

In any case, you have to imagine the complete book however you wish to, based on the clues of the provided footnotes. Your enjoyment will likely depend on how easily you can identify the references and their real life or fictional basis. For myself, I enjoyed it thoroughly and I hope that I'll see further Sagasti in translation soon.

To conclude, a favourite footnote and a clue* to decipher it:

Only twenty-four days separate the two most famous walks of the 20th century. - Footnote 112 of Chapter 3 of Leyden Ltd.

Hay algo de la escritura de Sagasti que me pareció fascinante, y es esa capacidad de absorber información y regurgitarla en lo su obra.
Este libro se presenta como una serie de notas al pie de una inexistente novela, y en el medio de esto se va tejiendo la trama de un lectivo de artistas que se manejan bajo el título de la novela. A medida que avanza la trama se dan mínimos y nimios detalles en algunas notas sueltas sobre el grupo y su supuesto creador, que a su vez se complementan con otras notas que no tienen relación directa con este primer texto, aunque sí hay una suerte de intertextualidad y simbolismo oculto que las relaciona. También es un gran recorrido por una inmensa cantidad de hechos del siglo XX, desde la segunda guerra mundial, Vietnam hasta The Beatles, pero que muy fácilmente cae en parecer un montón de datos sacados de Google y azarosamente puestos en conjunto para formar un libro. Y también este defecto se torna en una ventaja: ¿Qué es el enciclopedismo en esta época, sino un montón de datos sacados de Internet? La respuesta no la tengo, pero es una duda que me plantea el libro.

Premisa 1. Este es el primer libro que leo en su tipo y del cual nunca sabré de qué trató. El título es lo único que tiene de sugerente. Sí, he dicho SUGERENTE, no hay nada establecido.

Premisa 2. Este es el primer libro del cual me dejo llevar, estrictamente, por la única información disponible que tiene, en este caso, sus notas al pie.

Premisa 3. Este es el primer libro del cual, a pesar de mantener cierta coherencia en su aparato crítico, tienes que guiarte por intuición a lo que probablemente te propone. En este sentido, sus notas serán el único acceso a un posible diagrama de múltiples anécdotas, o momentos estelares, relacionados a todo lo que tenga que ver con Leyden, Ltd. y lo que eso conlleve.

Premisa 4. Este será el primer libro que leerás a tientas, quizá al principio con desgana y, ya avanzado, con genuino interés. Deberás volver a él muchas veces y en cada una de ellas, quizá algún día, se encontrarán más pesquisas que ayuden a establecer su posible significado.

Me parece muy interesante la propuesta de Sagasti, de construir un libro en base a notas al pie, para permitir que el lector pueda crear una historia según imagine los hechos. Pero a veces las virtudes pueden terminar siendo defectos, y creo es el caso. ¿Entretenido? Sí. ¿Bueno? No estoy convencido.

Inclasificable. Me recordó un poco a "Después de la luz" de Labatut pero menos depresivo.

Abusa un tanto de las referencias al arte primermundista, pero sigue siento un libro interesante como propuesta y ejercicio.
