Waking up with a stranger and a rose tattoo on her thigh isn't the worst thing that happens to socialite and supper club owner, Kaylen Roberts. It pales in comparison when she's pursued and terrorized by a Miami drug cartel looking for incriminating evidence they believe her boyfriend, Tim Madison left with her.

The stranger isn't random, either. Brian Swift is Tim's half-brother and a homicide detective on suspension, accused of taking bribes. He's frequently in hot water for protecting Tim and using investigation methods that walk a fine line between what's legal and what isn't, but even his talents are put to the test when Tim goes missing.

Brian not only has to take Kaylen as an unlikely partner, but he also embarks on a hell-bent trip down memory lane to follow convoluted clues left by his brother. The trail leads him on a journey that could cost him his life.

Heather Ames writes two mystery/suspense series, one with a paranormal twist, standalone suspense, romantic suspense, and short contemporary romances. When she’s not writing, she’s either thinking up new plots, traveling the world, or dreaming up new adventures.

She’s lived in five countries and seven states, hitchhiked around Europe, spent a year in a sixth-floor walk-up in Paris with a view of the Eiffel Tower, traveled by planes, trains, automobiles and ocean-going liners, and worked as a bartender in Madrid, Spain. She was also a military spouse for seven years and has two children, one born in Spain, the other in North Carolina.

During a long career in healthcare she carried pepper spray and mace in her bag for home health visits in the barrios and projects of Los
Angeles, encountered a loaded gun under a pillow and a shotgun behind a front door. She prepared reports for a medical examiner on DOAs in an ER, was in the witness box at a murder trial, and has seen more dead and/or mangled bodies than the average person. Her personal life has frequently strayed far from a sedate walk in the park, too.

As a result, her novels are filled with flawed characters who deal with challenging situations in ways that offer resolutions that aren’t always neatly cut and dried. Like real life.

A socialite with a past and a cop with a secret get (literally) thrown together for a wild ride of murder, mystery and mayhem in present-day Miami. Drug cartels and corrupt cops populate the pages to keep the action flowing and the reader engaged to solve the riddle at the story’s core. Great characters, vivid and (believably) unpredictable. The dialog’s pretty spiffy, with few of those clunky “he chortled” tags. Much dialog is preceded by an action so tags are unnecessary. And speaking of action, Ames does it well: car chases, car crashes, gunshots—all well crafted and highly visual. The storyline is intriguing, puzzling, yet credible, with a nicely satisfying ending that leaves the door open for one or more sequels, but it’s fine as a stand-alone, too.

3.5 stars. Set in Miami, the widowed owner of a new supper club is confronted with a missing boyfriend, a naked stranger in her bed, and a new mystery tattoo on her thigh. Kaylen is not sure who she can trust, and though something in her gut says Brian (the naked stranger) can be relied upon, the ever-increasing body count of dead friends and associates is making her more than a little nervous.

Brian is holding back a lot of things; his status as police detective (on admin leave due to accusations of bribery), his growing attraction to Kaylen, and the fact that her missing boyfriend is his half-brother.

Disclaimer: The author is a friend, and I've read earlier versions of this novel.

This story doesn't follow the typical plot of most romantic suspense novels, so if that's what you're looking for, you'll be disappointed; if you're looking for something fresh and less cookie-cutter, this may hit the spot. One thing that bugged me was a recurring action where Kaylen would sit down to eat and then either couldn't or did eat ONE bite and then felt sick. Girlfriend needs a cheeseburger, dangit! Also, there were no post-tattoo symptoms described; having gotten one myself a couple years ago, I wanted to hear how she dealt with the oozing of fluids, lotioning it up, etc., in her slinky cocktail dresses.

Kaylen is a smart, believable heroine (except for the not-eating thing) who goes beyond the "plucky" stereotype to being resourceful and steady in the clutch. Brian is a gorgeous guy (we all love 'em) with scars internal and external, also steady when it counts. Would like to spend more time with this unlikely couple.

On what's supposed to be the biggest night of her life, Kaylen suffers a memory lapse and wakes up in bed with a strange man. This turn of events leads her down a dangerous path involving drug cartels and crooked police, all this while a hurricane bears down on Miami.

Indelible is a tight, solid story. I haven't read a suspense in a while, and I enjoyed this one.

Excellent plot and characters. The author knows how to capture a reader's attention and keep it. Plenty of tense situations, some well crafted romantic scenes, hurricanes, fire, villains, false friends, beautiful dresses, cocktail parties. There'll be a sequel, I've heard. Goody!

This was such a GREAT book. I got pulled into the story from the very first page. I couldn't put it down until I got to the end. I read the whole book in one day! The writer did so well in keeping me in suspense. My curiosity kept me going with the reading!!

There is a lot going on in this novel so it was fun to see how all the pieces would fall into place by the end. Looking forward to reading the next installment: "A Swift Brand of Justice."
