The events in room 201 of the Red Cove Travel Inn, in Fleetham, were about to turn the small, sleepy, Texas town into a hotbed of police activity. When local prostitute, Tessie Johanan, is found brutally murdered, it leaves Sheriff Robert Binder and Detective Alison Chaney with a gruesome mystery to solve. With no obvious motive, scarcely any clues, and even few suspects, criminal profiler Aaron Duncan is called in to help identify the killer. As all the evidence begins to build against him, "Little Sammy" soon finds himself under close scrutiny. Being intellectually disabled and the town's drunk, Sammy has little going for him by way of defense. Did 'Little Sammy' kill Tessie in a drunken stupor? Or are the police holding the wrong man?
I suspected who the murderer was from the start. Not sure if this was intentional on the author’s part, but he threw in enough doubt to keep me reading until the end. Although there was a strong female lead, her inability to see past misleading evidence did not endear her to me. But I grew fond of Aaron & broken-but-redeemable Robert.
Deceit: A Life of Lies By Mark Hopkins While three people worked on case to find Tessie's murderer, for some reason they all found themselves in a different space and becoming someone connected with the suspect. Wait, you know what? This book really pissed me off, this is the first mystery that I have ever read in my life where there was no surprise, no Wow moments. It was so predictable that I keep reading because I just knew murderer couldn't be who I thought it was since it was in plain sight, so I kept reading to see who was and yes, that was the murderer🤦🏾♀️. The timeline had to be off too, unless the murderer was killing in elementary school 🤨. This definitely had potential to be a five star. I think if this author did extensive research on how to write murder mysteries, he will do a good job in the long run. 3*
This was my 1st read by this author. My sis wanted to try it because we enjoy a good suspense novel. However, this story was at best mediocre and predictable. The detectives that were supposed to be such veterans missed several clues to the crime and I'm not quite sure if the author tried to throw the readers off by having the detectives arrest the wrong suspect but it failed for me. Book fell flat somewhere around 25% because I predicted the rest of the story and who the killer was. Not sure if I will continue to read anything else from this author.
It's a perfect read for suspense/thriller lovers. It’s a twisty novel with the killer being not who you think he is. The lead detective controls the book with her strong personality. The actual killer has had his character developed with a heartless soul.
The character development in the book is phenomenally well written. You will feel the emotions throughout.
