The essential guide to living well with diabetes, written by an expert who has lived with the condition for more than four decades.
Whether you are newly diagnosed or have been living with diabetes for some time, this book will help you understand your diagnosis so you can manage and live well with your diabetes for as long as possible. Every aspect of your life with diabetes is covered - from diet, sex and exercise to mood changes, managing blood glucose levels and physical complications arising from the condition.
Dr Val Wilson draws on more than four decades of managing the condition and on her professional experience to help readers deal with their diagnosis, consider how it will affect their relationships and lifestyle, with advice on DAFNE for Type 1 diabetics and ways that Type 2 diabetes can eventually be reversed. Real-life case studies show other people's experiences of diabetes-related issues that you might also be dealing with.
This is the only book you need to learn how to self-manage diabetes.
Dr Val Wilson is an academic with a Ph.D and MSc. in diabetes health education, as well as having had Type 1 diabetes for 43 years. Her mission is to help others with diabetes, health professionals and carers by providing information, education and support through her diabetes books.
In 2016, DIABETES: FROM THE EBERS PAPYRUS TO STEM CELL TECHNOLOGY won a silver award from the Non-Fiction Authors' Association. HOW TO LIVE WELL WITH DIABETES has been nominated for the 2020/2021 British Medical Association book awards and most recently, HOW TO REDUCE YOUR CHILD'S SUGAR INTAKE, was published in January 2021.
Dr Wilson is published by Robinson, Little, Brown Book Group.
This book was recommended to me as I've just been diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes. The author, Dr Val Wilson, also has diabetes and she has written this clear, comprehensive self-help guide for everyone who wants to look after their diabetes properly so they can lead a full, healthy and active life. An excellent choice for anyone with diabetes (Type 1, Type 2 and diabetes during pregnancy are covered in-depth); you will not be disappointed. Five stars for an absolutely brilliant book!
This book contains everything you need to know about diabetes - from what the different types of diabetes are, to managing each condition properly. An excellent read, really informative and written by someone who actually has diabetes and a medical background, so they really know what thy're talking about.
As a group of five ladies each with diabetes in the Hempstead area, we were keen to read this book by local diabetes author, Dr Val Wilson. Dr Wilson held a library talk about managing diabetes well in our local area, so we were able to obtain this book from there.
All five members of the group agree that How to Live Well with Diabetes is extremely well written, in clear, concise language. The boo contains anonymous case studies of various scenarios from real people with diabetes that Dr Wilson has encountered in her studies . As a result, reading this book feels like getting information and support directly from someone very knowledgeable in self-managing diabetes. In addition, Dr Wilson has managed her own diabetes for 41 years, so it's not like a health professional telling you to do something when they have absolutely no idea what it's like to live with the condition.
Our overall assessment is that this is well-worth reading if you want or need to manage your diabetes well. You have nothing to lose and a lot to gain.
Having read a couple of other books by this author, I bought this one. It's very helpful and gives actual advice based on real case histories, as well as the author having diabetes herself. I've read books by GPs and diabetes consultants that don't really understand the psychological and social aspects of having diabetes. This book is brilliant in that it covers everything, including emotions and people who have diabulimia, and it's written by someone with a health education background, not medicine, which makes all the difference.
I've used the advice and information in this book to help me understand why my diabetes is so difficult to manage and why my blood glucose levels are often high when I'm upset or depressed. I've been able to alter my insulin levels to cope with these times. A really worthwhile read and I'd fully recommend it as it's different from any other book about diabetes I've ever read.
This is a really helpful, easy to read book for anyone with diabetes. There are practical tips and facts included by the author who has a very long personal experience of having diabetes herself, so it’s not like a nurse or doctor telling you what to do. Although it’s not a cookery book, there are also lots of great recipes at the back and my family have really enjoyed trying some of them out. I’ve read other diabetes books and found that they give steps to follow to make your diabetes easier to manage but this book is completely different as it gives you the knowledge to know why something is happening and what you can do about it. Really good and can’t recommend enough!
This is an excellent book for anyone with diabetes. It's written by someone with over forty years experience of living with the condition herself and this book explains every aspect of diabetes from diet to exercise, blood glucose levels to how to make sure you get the diabetes care you need. This book is extremely comprehensive and laid out in a way that makes it easy to find anything you want or need to know. I thoroughly recommend HOW TO LIVE WELL WITH DIABETES by Dr Val Wilson.
Dr Val Wilson, who has had Type 1 diabetes for 41 years, has written this brilliantly comprehensive guide to show us how to live well with diabetes. I have had the condition for some time but How to Live Well with Diabetes gives excellent information, education and support to both those who already have diabetes and to the newly diagnosed and their families.
This book is written by someone who has diabetes herself and covers every aspect of living well with the condition - Type 1, Type 2 and the development of diabetes during pregnancy. There are case studies that help show real problems in diabetes self-management and this book provides practical solutions. I can honestly say that this is the best diabetes book I've ever read because it's not a step-by-step guide or a book that tells you to look after yourself, or else. I wish I'd had this book when I was first diagnosed and I would thoroughly recommend it !
Very clear information and advice. Covers every aspect of diabetes (type 1, type 2, diabetes in pregnancy) and is comprehensive:diet, exercise, medication, medications that interfere with the ones you're taking, treatment options including all available technology, blood testing and what the results mean, how to keep blood tests within the health range to prevent complications, nutrition, reversing type 2, emotional consequences of having diabetes, dealing with others/relationships, work, sleep, sex, and much, much more.
This book is written by someone with a long history of type 1 diabetes and who is also a diabetes health education expert, giving the best of both worlds. This is an excellent book for people who've just been diagnosed or, like me, who've had it for years. Very much recommended for anyone who has diabetes, their family and carers. Health professionals should read it too as they would learn a lot!
I don't normally write book reviews but I have to say, this book has been indispensable to me during the coronavirus epidemic so far when I was self-isolating. I developed symptoms of the virus after I'd had the flu and my diabetes control was appalling.
I bought this book before Christmas as a general guide to improving my diabetes, but when I was ill, the advice was so helpful. I phoned my diabetes nurse to ask a couple of questions, but she just said to follow my usual rules for illness. It was too general, and I needed answers quickly about specific topics. Thankfully, I found what I needed in this book, so recommend it to anyone with Type 1 or Type 2.
I've not read this from cover to cover, just selected the bits I needed to know from the contents. I've found the writing very easy to understand and subjects are covered in enough depth. I particularly like the fact the author has also had diabetes for a long time, so they fully understand what it's like to live with, and what problems occur day to day. I bought this book after a recommendation from a friend and I've not been disappointed.
A really thorough, well-written book covering absolutely everything diabetes-related. I have type 2 diabetes and I've learned how to manage my blood sugar levels and meals in a better way. This has helped me no end - I've lost weight and I feel better so I'm exercising more. I wish I'd had this book when I was first diagnosed!
I've been on lock down with coronavirus symptoms for three weeks and fortunately, I bought this book from The Works before I became unwell. I've found it really useful as it explains how to look after blood glucose levels during illness. This book gives loads of useful information about every diabetes-related topic all in one handy resource. Just what I needed and I'm so glad I bought this book.
A wonderful book that covers absolutely everything you need to know, full of good advice. The author also has diabetes, so understands how people feel trying to manage the condition well, as well as what it's live to actually have diabetes. I thoroughly recommend to anyone with diabetes (Type 1 or Type 2), as well as their families and friends so they can try and understand the condition.
My grandson bought me this wonderful book for Christmas and I can honestly say it's the best health book I've ever read. I was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes last year and couldn't get to grips with having to watch what I ate and all the other things the nurse wanted me to do. I'd convinced myself that my diabetes was only mild and not worth bothering with. My grandson was worried and this book has been a life-saver. It's shown me exactly what my condition is - something the diabetes nurse didn't really have time for, as well as how I can make small changes in my life that make a huge difference to feeling well. I've lost weight and my diabetes has all but disappeared. I couldn't have done it without the advice and support in this book.
I didn't know about goodreads or how to join, so my grandson has done all this for me and he's written this review for me while I've told him what to put. I'm really pleased he bought me this book and recommend it 100% for anyone with diabetes.
I give this book five stars because it's helped me to have better diabetes control with tips, facts and recipes, as well as easy-to-understand explanation of why problems with diabetes occur. I bought this book when it first cam out in August last yer and read it avidly. It is easy to read and understand. I've completely changed my lifestyle because of if, eating well, exercising regularly, and losing weight so my blood sugar levels are now very stable, thanks to the advice and support in this book.
A brilliant book! This has really helped me to live a better life with Type 1 diabetes, explaining blood glucose fluctuations and why they can occur, preventing complications, sensible diet and exercise strategies, drug interactions . . . the list goes on. This book is perfect for anyone with diabetes, Type 1 r 2, and their families (my girlfriend has learnt a lot about the emotional and psychological consequences of having a partner with diabetes). Definitely a five-star rating.
I downloaded this book on Kindle because I wanted to read it but I'm on coronavirus lockdown. I've read the chapters that are relevant to my diabetes and I must say, this book is clear and east to understand. It covers everything you need to know about living with diabetes. Once everything goes back to normal, I fully intend to implement the information ad advice. At the moment, I'm eating what's in the cupboards, so it's difficult to male changes, but I will when I can to be healthier.
This book has taught me so much! I like that the author has diabetes herself, so it's written from this perspective of what people really need to know, as well as being from a health education background. An excellent book to have and refer to at any time, with a comprehensive index covering everything you'll ever need to know about this condition.
I bought this book to support a local author and I'm so pleased I did! Very comprehensive, just what I needed, plus some excellent recipes.
I know that Dr Wilson has another book coming out in January next year. Can't wait to read that too! Thank you, Val Wilson fr your very useful and relevant advice and information.
A very helpful, comprehensive guide to everything diabetes-related. I bought this for my brother and read it avidly. I've learned what he has to cope with. It also covers dealing with the emotional side of having diabetes, which has been really useful for both of us.
A really well-written, easy to understand guide to everything that concerns diabetes, helping you to manage the condition better and to live a healthy life with diabetes. Highly recommended.
I joined Goodreads today to rate this book (Kindle version). I've read it and referred to it several times now and found the information and advice invaluable. I recently needed to know about ketoacidosis and couldn't find what I needed to know online. As well as covering all subjects people with diabetes need to know, it covers ketoacidosis in detail: why it occurs, how to prevent it and how it's treated if you're admitted to hospital with it. Really good book and easy to understand.
