Reviews

[Alex]

Not gonna write full reviews of each of these as they are quite formulaic but ... mostly in a good way. The pattern has settled though, Misa is in a school class, someone does something bad either to someone else or to Misa and she either helps them take revenge or does the deed herself via black magic. I don't know if there will be a shift later in the series but it's hard to see the formula holding for an entire 17 volumes. Nevertheless - art is average but sometimes effective and the storytelling is sporadically wonderful. The final two stories of the volume particularly, firstly a story in which a bunch of thieves selling stolen goods at school bully Misa but also want her to join her gang... 'cause magic. So she casts a spell to miniaturise them and has them rob a papier mache model of the town she built. Brilliant - yes... but then she sets it on fire as her final revenge and they die horribly. absolutely brutal. The final story is slightly more surreal as a young boy, bullied by his mother for poor grades, feels the stress and falls through a magic mirror and turns into a butterfly. He can't get back to this state of bliss and Misa helps hi,. I guess it's one of the few times we see a more relatable side to her character and I think the first story that nobody died horribly.
