Drawing on recent archaeological investigations, new scholarship and its author's own original research and staging experience, this book is the first extended English-language treatment of the Roman theatre to be published in several decades. With the aid of thirty-five black and white illustrations, a full bibliography and index, The Roman Theatre and its Audience provides an intriguing account for general readers and students, while presenting a great deal, too, which will be of interest to the specialist.
Interesting for students of drama. The first two chapters, on the development of Roman theater, would be more broadly appealing, to include those interested in Roman society in all its aspects.
There was one chapter that sought to show to the reader how a play would actually be staged. That chapter failed for me; as he mentioned in the start of that chapter, it would be easier and more enjoyable to actually see a reconstructed play. I concur. I bailed on that chapter 2/3's of the way through it.
