Five days after his sixteenth birthday, Lucky—or Luccan, as he’s known in the Sunlands of Ethra—cut down a horde of wraiths with the help of his magical, living blade, Ciarrah. Then they ended the worst undead of all—Lucky's mother, Liliana, or rather the evil creature she had become. Now he needs a chance to rest, but he can't catch a break. The otherworld invaders want to take Ethra as their new home, and one defeat hasn’t even slowed them down.

Ancient wizard Thurlock continues to help Lucky learn about his unique magic as they travel together, but when they reach the capital city, they find few allies and too many Sunlandian traitors. They're forced to flee, but their discouraged spirits lift when they’re joined on the road by an old wizard friend of Thurlock’s and some new young allies. Lucky has armies, friends, family, shifters, dragons, a faithful dog, a winged horse, and magical tools on his side. But when war comes like a great storm, hurling at him everything from zombies to hateful wizards to twisted drakes, can he hope to prevail—or even survive?

Lou Hoffmann, a mother and grandmother now, has carried on her love affair with books for more than half a century, yet she hasn’t even made a dent in the list of books she’d love to read—at least partly because the list keeps growing. She reads factual things—books about physics and history and fractal chaos, but when she wants truth, she looks for it in quality fiction. She loves all sorts of wonderful things: music and silence, laughter and tears, youth and age, sunshine and storms, forests and fields, flora and fauna, rivers and seas. Even good movies and popcorn! Those things help her breathe, and everyone she knows helps her write. (Special mention goes to (1) George the Lady Cat and (2) readers.) Proud to be a bisexual, biracial woman, Lou considers every person a treasure not to be taken for granted. In her life, she’s seen the world’s willingness to embrace differences change, change back, and change again in dozens of ways, but she has great hope for the world the youth of today will create. She writes for readers who find themselves anywhere on the spectrums of age and gender, aiming to create characters that live not only in their stories, but always in your imagination and your heart.

“Your job as a leader is to tap into the power of that higher purpose—and you can’t do it by retreating to the analytical. If you want to lead, have the courage to do it from the heart.” ~ Lead from the Heart, Gail McGovern

Lucky, of ‘Dragon’s Rise’ by Lou Hoffmann, has had many challenges in his young life, but the biggest one is yet to come. There’s an evil poisoning the land that threatens to destroy everything. With the threat of war on the horizon, Thurlock and Lucky travel to seek allies, but, as usual, nothing in Lucky’s life goes as planned. What is supposed to be a visit to the capital, in order to drum up support for the eminent battle that looms on the horizon, turns out to be a lot more challenging that he and Thurlock thought it would be.

Thurlock leaves Han in charge while he and Lucky are traveling. Han hates dealing with the administrative, day-to-day dealings of the Sisterhold, but does the best he can. Being a soldier, he is much more comfortable managing military things. Right now, recruitment, from anywhere he can get it, is a main priority. As time goes on, reconnaissance mission reports become more ominous; enemy troops are growing larger and more menacing. As much as Han hates the thought of it, war seems unavoidable. Besides that, his lover, Henry, is there, but their duties must come first, so they can’t be together the way both wish they could which is hard on both of them. As difficult as it is, Han knows he must keep his mind on the task at hand and off Henry.

By the time Lucky and Thurlock arrive at the capital, the first thing they have to do is report to the council to inform them of the drastic measures Thurlock had to take in order to save their lives. The council is ominous, but, after serious consideration, rule that Thurlock was justified in his actions. During their journey, they are met with several frightening encounters; as harrowing as they are, many solutions demonstrate the yet untapped potential that Lucky possesses, making him more powerful than even Thurlock expects. As the proclaimed Sun Child, they will be indispensable. Thurlock’s ongoing regret is that Lucky has to learn such harsh lessons while he is still so young. Still, he is going to teach Lucky everything he can before that time.

As the series goes on, I continue to be enthralled by the descriptions of Ethra, all the mystical elements, and both brave and scary characters, presented in such vivid detail. It’s almost like being there, which is, at times, a very scary thought. My affection and respect for Lucky, Thurlock, and Han continues to grow. Thanks, Lou, for the ongoing surreal experience.

Dragon's Rise is the fourth book in the Sun Child Chronicles following Luccan and his harrowing adventures in Ethra. Luccan has just slain his mother, who had become a horrifying, evil creature, and has also defeated a good portion of her wraith army. Unfortunately for Luccan, there is no time for him to relax and learn more about how to be the Suth Chiell because the creatures behind his mother's transformation are still relentlessly attacking Ethra.

The new enemy is a much more grave threat than anyone could have guessed, and not even Thurlock is sure about their chances of winning. In an attempt to gain more allies for the upcoming battle, Thurlock is heading to Nedhra City with Luccan. Thurlock will take as much time as he can to teach Luccan how to be more adept with magic. Upon arriving, they are faced with even more challenges than they could have expected, and there are very few allies to be found. With dangers and death around every corner, how will Luccan be able to master his magic, and how will Thurlock be able to learn more about their unknown adversaries? Find out in this thrilling book!

Opinion:
Lou Hoffmann has created an amazing world and amazing characters, and it just keeps getting better with every book! Each book seems to end with an event that has me wanting to read the next one ASAP. The world is vivid, the characters are relatable, the story is well-written, and the fight scenes are intense (in a good way). This book seems to flow properly; there aren't any scenes that make the reader think, “Wait, how did that happen?” Another thing I like is that it includes the prologue and first chapter to the next book. This tells the reader that the next book is already 'in the works' and that it will be just as good as all the others. I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys reading about fantasy and wants an immersive experience.
