Engel and Reid’s Physical Chemistry provides students with a contemporary and accurate overview of physical chemistry while focusing on basic principles that unite the sub-disciplines of the field. The Third Edition continues to emphasize fundamental concepts, while presenting cutting-edge research developments to emphasize the vibrancy of physical chemistry today.
I was looking to brush up on some P-chem and was able to find this edition for cheap. We used the Atkins P-Chem for my undergrad, and for me it is far superior to this book. I understand the scope of both macroscopic and microscopic physical chemistry is vast, but some subjects could have been explained in a more thorough manner. The thermodynamics sections were awful, if you haven't had courses in calculus based physics this book won't help you get through the questions at the end of the chapter. I will say for me since it was just review I did enjoy the briefness of the chapters, the chapter questions were also very good with a decent range of whiffle ball questions to very challenging ones. So if you are taking P-Chem as an undergraduate, I will hope this review will encourage you to use the Atkins book or other online resources. Other than the questions, which I think are good, this textbook will get you nowhere.
