"We are all different, yet the same." A book that encourages diversity and inclusion. This fun and beautifully illustrated book in the Mr. Winston book series celebrates individuality but also commonality among all of the different pets that come together as “Mr. Winston Turns One!”. Mr. Winston is a little nervous about meeting all of his colorful new friends that he’s never met before. Like any “first” he wonders, “What will they think of me since I am different?”
Mr. Winston is led by his sister cat Nyssa to embrace being unique, as all the animals that come will be different too! In the end, Mr. Winston has a great birthday! He learns not only are they all very different, but still, so much the same. The reality is that most of these animals are based on the likeness of real pets that submitted their pictures and stories to be at Mr. Winston’s first birthday through social media. In the end twenty made it into the book to celebrate the day. These very real and very different social friends of Mr. Winston exemplify what the book is trying to convey, “We are all different, yet the same.”
"Mr. Winston Turns One!: A Picture Book About Shyness and Inclusion" is an adorable book about a little cat who is about to turn 1. He knows there is going to be a party for him, but he becomes worried that his friends are too different from him and they will not like how he looks different. He is worried that since he looks so different that none of his friends will even want to play with him. His older sister assures him that all the animals are unique in their own ways and he shouldn't be worried. When the party finally starts, he learns that all the differences don't matter and they all play and have a great time. The book is so sweet and great to teach kids about how others can be different but everyone can still have fun. The book is written in rhyme, but the rhyming does not work well all of the time. Reading the book aloud can be difficult sometimes because the story does not flow well at times, but it is so cute that it can be overcome by just trying to read the story without forcing the rhyme. This book would be a cute bedtime story to read to kids around ages 3-7.
Mr. Winston, the cat, is about to turn one year old. He can’t wait for his friends to come to his birthday party, but he is apprehensive because he feels that his white fur is too ordinary. He begins to compare himself to other dogs, cats, birds, butterflies, and similar creatures. His sister, Nyssa, tries to explain that each of us is smart, curious, and unique. When the party day arrives, the fun never ends. Mr. Winston realizes that differences make us stronger.
The book has bonus features like a dot to dot and maze page. Recommended as a self-esteem book for elementary school children.
Lovely story for younger children with vibrant illustrations
This is a lovely book and concept. I got it to read with my grand-niece as she She tends to be a bit shy when meeting other children for the first time. She also adores animals so I'm sure she'll really enjoy the story - and pictures, which are wonderful.
Read this with my sons and they kept saying aww throughout. Cute story with the most beautiful illustrations. The story is very imaginative yet relatable to many little readers who might also suffer from shyness. Sweet book, highly recommend.
I loved shy and endearing Mr. Winston from the first page. He is just so cute. This book does a lovely job of addressing the feelings of anxiety a child might when meeting new friends. And he overcomes them! This is such a sweet book about friendships every young child will enjoy.
A cute little book about a kitten, named Mr. Winston, who has a birthday party. At first he’s kind of shy, but then he realizes all different animals and all shapes and sizes can all play together.
