When private detective Sam Quinton sets out to solve the murders of an exotic dancer and small-time gambler, he ends up in the middle of an organized crime war, testing Quinton’s loyalty to an old friend and making him the killers’ next target. While working to stay one step ahead of the killers, Quinton also has to safeguard the life of an elderly couple, who unwittingly hold the key to solving the murders and ending the war.
A former high-school teacher and college instructor, Kevin R. Doyle is the author of numerous short horror stories. He’s also written four crime thrillers including The Group and The Anchor, and one horror novel, The Litter. In the last few years, he’s begun working on the Sam Quinton private eye series, published by Camel Press. The first Quinton book, Squatter’s Rights, was nominated for the 2021 Shamus award for Best First PI Novel. The sixth Sam Quinton book, The Booker, was released in August of 2025.
This fast paced mystery is full of twists and turns that will keep you guessing. Sam is a lovable tough guy and makes a great protagonist. It is believable that he gets himself into the situations that he does. Although he has a tough exterior, he fights for those who can’t fight for themselves. I enjoyed reading, not only the mystery, but also watching how Sam develops as a character. I can’t wait to see where the series goes next!
A great start to a new series! This fast paced detective novel was certainly a page turner. The main character, Sam Quinton, a former pro wrestler, was charming and realistic. The only reason why I'm not giving this book five stars is due to the profanity. So if you're a person who's completely fine with profanity, then this would be a five star book for you. I recommend this book.
