Catriona Clarke is a mercenary demon leading a gang of reapers and working with Lucifer to atone for her sins. The Hellcats’ mission is to collect the marked souls of the damned and bring them to Hell once they perish. When Catriona returns from collecting a soul, she discovers the rival gang of demons, the Hellhounds, have marked her ex-boyfriend.
Conflicted about going to reap Zeke’s soul, she reluctantly goes to collect. In a whirlwind of chaos, Catriona discovers that the son of Satan, Damien, has mistakenly marked the innocent and pure soul of Zeke’s twin brother, Lowell. Her gut instinct tells her to stand up against Lucifer and the demons of Hell, but in doing so, she will lose everything she’s worked hard for.
Is her ex-boyfriend’s brother worth the trouble?
Readers of Patricia Briggs, Darynda Jones, and Kevin Hearne will devour this Hellishly fantastic series.
It had really great characters and I love her unique spin on the Underworld. I'm looking forward to purchasing the second book as I feel they are just going to continue to grow and be even better.
I have not read much urban fantasy. I don’t know why, I enjoy the genre, it is just that there is so much for me to read. Seriously my TBR pile is insane. Then I heard about a book called Highway to Hell coming out and I decided to spread my literary wings.
I am glad I did!
Okay, here’s the deal on this book. Catriona is a Hellcat. She and her sister come from Hell on motorcycles to gather souls condemned to Hell. It is a job she got when she landed in Hell, and as far as sentences go in Hell, it is a cushy job. Yeah, there are things that are not necessarily all peaches and cream, but it beats serving an eternity of torment. Then Catriona and her sisters are tasked with retrieving the soul of her ex, and the reason she is doing time in Hell, and along the way she discovers that Satan’s son, Damien, marked the wrong soul. Zeke’s twin brother, who is innocent, was marked instead. Her instincts tell her to stand up to Satan and do what is right, but in doing so she can lose all she has worked for.
Several things become evident when you read this book. 1) Lydia Stevens has experience riding a motorcycle. 2) A lot of research on the subject of Hell was done. 3) She can write with a capital “W”!!! This book moves, pardon the pun, like a bat out of hell. It can easily be finished in a weekend. The characters are engaging and well hashed out. Parts made me laugh, others cringe and I could not wait to see what happened next.
If I was pressed to ding it in anyway, it would be in some small editing and spelling mistakes, but these were few and far between.
This was a fun hellish ride with Catorina and her hellcats or I should say saber hellcats. Catronia is the narrator of this story and she is badass. She owns her sins and is doing her best to make restitutions for her being not so good as a human. There is a loads of snark and man the author sure knows her motorcycles. Sugar practically was a living entity in the book.
Getting to know her other hellcats and what landed them in hell in the first place was dolled out throughout the story.
Trying to figure out what angle Damien, Lucifer’s son was working kept her on her toes. Deciding to make a stand for a mismarked soul placed her right in the cross hairs of some really bad retribution. While she may be a demon she still believed in fair play.
There are some snorting funny bits, snarky bit, revelations and some bits that really make you reel from the loss. It was a dark and twisty ride that had you exhilarated one minute and emotionally exhausted the next, but you held on till the end to see what it was all for.
I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
I really liked the premise of this book. The blurb sounded interesting and I couldn’t wait to dive in. Unfortunately I struggled staying invested in the story until approx 3/4 of the way through. It seemed to drag til then and then finally took off. The last part of the book flew by and that’s the only reason it made it to 4 stars.
This was a wonderful book. It didn't seem rushed. This was sweet and steamy, full of romance and passion with great characters that were interesting enough to draw you.
I had such fun reading Highway to Hell and getting to know Catriona and her gang of fellow reapers! I was quickly drawn into the story and loved all the action-packed adventures with a dash of mystery. I’m so looking forward to the next book in this series!
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
