Reckless courage, desperate loyalty, and the will to survive.
Redmond knows three things about the woman who has imprisoned his archers. She is beautiful. She is cunning. And she cares nothing for their lives.
When she drugs his men in preparation for enslavement in the deadly salt mines, Redmond embarks on an audacious and impossible plan—steal the castle from her and sell it to the highest bidder. To do that, he and his band of archers must hold the castle against an overwhelming force of men who believe Redmond murdered their relatives and a King more preoccupied with territorial expansion than peace and security in his realm. Failure means a lingering death in the mines, but success might be just as dangerous.
James is a twenty-nine-year-old stuck in an older man’s body. He loves to paddle his canoe, shoot his handmade longbows in the woods, make knives, study martial arts, and generally enjoys challenging himself. When not teaching or writing about the real past, he is imagining worlds and histories that might have been, should have been, or may yet be.
James has two homes (though only one house)--the mountains of Idaho and the forests of New England--where he canoes, hikes, camps, rock climbs, and shoots the longbows he makes himself. He lives in Massachusetts with his wife.
James is a professional historian whose published works include two histories of the Inquisition, a documentary history of Columbus's first voyage, a transcription of a colonial era account book from Weymouth, Massachusetts, and a global history of piracy. This means that he is a professional teller of stories, both real and imagined.
James's favorite author is J.R.R. Tolkien, though he will never be able to watch the Peter Jackson Hobbit films again. The first viewing nearly gave him a fit. He loves The Giver and The Book Thief. He has read all the Hunger Games novels, but thinks Katniss should have ended up with Gale. (Sorry Peeta fans.) He enjoys Harry Potter and thinks magic should be real--so long as he owns the Elder Wand.
Redmond is back!!!! .... And I couldn't be happier about it.
We get to FINALLY hear all the ruckus Redmond was stirring in the southern land while he was gone and Weyland and Neahl were hunting down the Salassani.
I didn't think it possible to hate a character with such determination and force but lady Selgrave does that entirely. The entire time I was waiting for the victorious moment of Redmond killing the whore.... Yet somehow she slinked away unharmed, ugh!!
Jannik frowned. “Are you planning on using the sewer to get us out?” he asked. “Because if you are, I’m going to protest.” Kamil grimaced. “I’d rather die up here in battle,” he said. “There are some things worse than death.” “You two are a little dramatic,” Redmond said. “I have no intention of going through the sewer. We’re going to need our horses if we hope to get out of here.”
I love how boys complain about girls and then they're even worse!!! This book was full of heart wrenching moments, laughter, and utter frustration from whores who tried to prove that they weren't lying little b**s.
Okay so I had two choices during Hurricane Milton (yeah, I know should have made this earlier). Anway's so I could either chose number one staring at the ceiling and hoping sleep will finally come to me spoiler it didn't. Though now to number two I could read and forget about the raging winds and rain pounding on the roof. If you guessed number two you are correct! To be clear I realize that during my tirade of my original review I forgot to mention that this book isn't bad and thankfully there is no cheating involving Emilia and Redmond. After rereading my review, I realized it was very harsh, and I didn't mean to discourage anyone from reading this book. As a person who attempted/attempting to write a book I understand that it isn't easy and that the reader might not always see the book you wrote the way you see it. Don't get me wrong this series is extraordinary and incredibly good. I just don't quite like this book as much as I enjoyed the other books so far in the series. The mystery and suspense are wonderfully written. I added an extra star cause four of my favorite characters were in this book!!! I absolutely love Kamil, Janick, Rollo, and Mara. They are so badass!!!!!!!! One thing that hasn't changed is my dislike for Lady Selgrave (more like Lady put you in your grave if you ask me) She is so infuriating. To be honest I have to hand it to her for being able to hide her true snakeskin. She is the type of person I hope I never have the pleasure of meeting in real life. This is my personal opinion of this book and has no influence besides the fact I love this series!!
Jannick 5 stars Kamil 5 stars Rollo 5 stars Mara 5 stars for being badass and a good spy. Redmond 3.5 stars Emilia 1.5 stars Lady Selgrave 0.1 star
This book shows Redmond's character as a leader and a fighter. Also his caring for the little people who can't take care of themselves. There are a lot battle passages, similar to Bernard Cornwell.
So, I guess my main issue with this book compared to the rest is that it dragged on quite a bit… Redmond was gone for 18 years and a whole book was spent on what 2-5 weeks of an event to cover 20 years?!? Let alone an event that could have probably been told in 1/3 maybe 1/4 the amount of pages… I don’t know whenever an author writes a prequel they need to be careful because it means they left things out of their previous books… I enjoy this author and the overall story but this should have been similar to Chronicles and had a handful of short stories covering the 18 years…

Men are obviously the problem in this world, especially if you believe the characters in the book. But in truth there are some people that are pure evil (most politicians), some who can’t think straight, many just concerned about their little lives, and some, perilously few who are actual heroes.
What a cool plot, and even cooler knowing it's crafted on real historical events. This was a unique book in that it wasn't chronological with the rest of the series, but I nevertheless enjoyed reading.
Yet another great book. This is proving to be a very good series of books. If you want action with realist and detailed action. Then this is for you. The historical related detail is amazing. You feel as if you are there with the characters.
Excellent. Not just good, but truly excellent. Believable excellent characters, excellently drawn battle scenes, and an excellently woven theme. I repeat :- Excellent !
This book is about Redmond and all the trials and how he overcome with his companions. Captures and put in the mines as a slave, always fighting for his life and never leaving any of his men behind. Making new allies and also foes. Not knowing who can be trusted. Going back to where he came from and seeing what is left there for him. A great book of telling the life of Redmond.
