From fated mates to fairy tales, from the cold depths of space to hot wildfires in Alaska, Elva Birch spins entrancing tales of love and transformation.

In ‘Better Half’, a woman grieving for her dog encounters a wolf…who happens to also be a man claiming he is her mate. But Meghan has been burned by love before, and her past is still hunting her. A hot, heart-wrenching happy-ever-after, not previously published. (10,000 words)

In ‘The Dazzling Finister’, an artificial intelligence learns to love, and when her finister is taken from her, sacrifices everything to find him again in a journey that spans galaxies and years and many shapes. A sweet science fiction retelling of a fairy tale, originally published in Once Upon a Time charity anthology. (6,000 words)

In ‘The Neighbors Might Talk’, Trudy and Rikard have their quiet retirement all planned out - a plan which doesn't include the gorgeous naked dragon shifter who crash-lands in their garden. A spicy ménage romance with tea, originally published in Two Mates for the Dragon charity anthology. (10,000 words)

In ‘Breakup’, a trapper in Alaska knows that spring will draw away the otter shifter who has been living with him all winter in his isolated cabin. A short, bittersweet story with a hint of heat, not previously published. (1,700 words)

In ‘Fire Control’, a dragon princess who can’t shift finds her mate in a hot-tempered, foul-mouthed Alaska wildlands firefighter and makes a stunning first impression by dropping a helicopter bucket of swampwater on top of her. A steamy lesbian romance romp, originally published in Her Wild Soulmate charity anthology. (10,000 words)

In ‘Balance’, a young man struggling with his own identity journeys to a modern-day witch living in a lonely forest garden and is presented with an unexpected connection and a tantalizing choice. A gentle transgender romance with earth magic, originally published in Once Upon an Enchanted Forest anthology. (8,000 words)

In ‘Leashed’, a golden retriever shifter finds himself on the wrong end of the law and has a lot of explaining to do to the beautiful animal impound officer who is his destined mate! A short, hilarious story, originally published in Prompted. (1,000 words)

I've read the first 2 books in this collection, which I received an early copy of, and they are so different but really fun and imaginative. The first book is my favorite, especially since the author noted that she wrote this book after the loss of her pets and it brought a certain poignancy to the story. Meghan meets Fred aka Trevor (funny meet, since Trevor is a shape shifting wolf and had been that way for a while and therefore, didn't have clothing). Meghan has a past and is scared so Trevor needs to get past her barriers but he's so sweet and I loved their relationship.

The second book is a retelling of a Russian fairy tale, The Dazzling Falcon Finister, which I've never heard of before but it was a fun story about a sweet AI unit that receives her most fervent wish- a finister. The finister was able to use an avatar and chose a humanoid form and together, they became friends. Can these two now be together? It was a heartwarming story about learning to love.

If the other books are similar to this, I'll definitely enjoy the rest of the book.

Sweet collection of heartwarming shorts that left me with a lot of warm and fuzzies.
Better half. Even with the author's warning I was silently crying reading this one. Inwas so happy to see Meg get a backbone and stand up to Grayden. Trevor was the perfect missing piece for Meg.
The Dazzling Finster. I wasn't looking for much emotion or heart with androids and AI, and such, but I was so wrong!!! Inspirational and uplifting!
The Neighbor's Might Talk. Another unexpected and welcome sweet story. Magic and sweet heat! I loved the turn this story took! Love knows no age! Lol.
Breakup. Magical and bittersweet, but
it tugged at my heartstrings.
Fire Control. This was a short fun karmic story with female soulmates. Entertaining.
Balance. Robin has body dysmorphia and goes to Marg the witch for help with his transgender issues. Stunning resolution!!!
Leashed. Very short quickie with a domestic dog shifter and a human. Cute!
There is something in here for everyone. Check it out, and you won't be disappointed.

A really interesting collection. A couple of the stories are in other anthologies I have, but I like those stories, and the new ones were fantastic and so different. They all had something special about them.

Shape Shifters: Vol. 1

Loved all of the stories. My favorite was Better Half and Fire Control. The others were also good but I did have favorites. Highly recommend the book for a good variety.
