David J Cooper, originally from England, now enjoys the Mexican way of life with his three dogs, Chula, Sooty, and Benji. After fifteen years of teaching English in Mexico, he left that behind and moved from the city to a small Mexican town where he now concentrates on his writing. When he isn't writing, you might find him walking his dogs or eating tacos in the town square. He is currently writing a series about a paranormal investigator named Penny Lane. He says that his own personal paranormal experiences inspired him to write the series. He has also written books on English grammar from his experience in teaching the language. He has also published a book, The Devil Knows, which is about the perverse relationship between Ian Brady and Myra Hindley, the Moors murderers of 1960's Britain. He was in touch with Ian Brady during research into the book, which was published two months before Brady's death. David is featured in the Best Poems and Poets Awards 2012 for his first and only poem God's Garden.
There are certain qualities I look for when determining if a book is “good” or not. Basically, it boils down to two things – it must be readable and it must be entertaining. The readable part is straightforward – if the writing has so many errors that it cannot be comfortably read, then it isn’t readable. This title is riddled with formatting and storytelling issues, so it is not easy to read, but it can be done. So this book ticks the first box. However, being entertaining is clearly subjective – what I enjoy and what you enjoy will be totally different. This title, though, does not contain the basics of a good story. The characters are paper-thin, the plot is so linear that any hint at suspense is contrived, and most of all nothing stands out as interesting! Nothing! I was very disappointed, to say the least, because this title has gotten many 5-star reviews on Amazon. There is barely a story here and if I was an English teacher, I would have failed this paper. I know I sound harsh, but that’s my personal opinion. Of course, you should read the book for yourself – it is free after all – and form your own opinion. Just don’t get your hopes up like me.
